Severe Gales Cause Disruption Around Dover Area

Thursday, 18 January 2007
Cross-Channel ferry services from Dover were suspended today as severe gales swept across the area.

Ferries and other shipping took shelter off the English and French coasts. Passengers due to travel on the ships were advised to contact their ferry operator for further information.

Jubilee Way, on the A2 approach into Dover, was closed, and there was more traffic disruption when a tree was blown down on Castle Hill, part of the diversion route.

A wall also collapsed in Dour Street, Dover.

At nearby Deal, the Indoor Tennis Centre in Victoria Park suffered significant damage and the district council closed the site immediately. A spokesman for the council said an asessment would be undertaken to determine how much work would be needed to restore the facility during the coming days.
