Going Smoke Free On 1 July

Tuesday, 26 June 2007
Dover District Council continues to work with local businesses and people to prepare for the introduction of national Smokefree legislation. New laws will make it an offence to smoke in virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England from 1 July.

Enforcement of the legislation in the district is the responsibility of DDC's Environmental Health team. The team has been working with local businesses, distributing information, and responding to enquiries from the public. DDC has appointed a dedicated Smokefree Officer, Jeremy Lewis. The Council, working with partners from the NHS Stop Smoking Service and the Kent Fire Service, also hosted a special Smokefree roadshow in Dover Town Centre on National No Smoking Day in March. The roadshow launched a campaign to keep people informed about the legislation. DDC's Environmental Health team held a special competition with local schools to design posters for the campaign, and the six winners were presented with prizes at the event.
