GB's Blend Of Youth And Experience Will Be Ready For The Dover World Cup Challenge

Monday, 9 July 2007
Team GB has named a squad of 24 archers for the Dover round of this year's Meteksan FITA World Cup series, including Athens Olympic bronze medalist Alison Williamson.

The event takes place at the Duke of York's Military School in Dover between July 30 and August 5, and Head Coach Peter Suk has named six archers in each category - men's and women's recurve, and men's and women's compound - to fly the British flag.

"It's a bit of a cliche, but we will have a mixture of youth and experience, and this is a fabulous opportunity for all the archers who have been selected," said Team GB performance manager Barry Eley. "It is going to be great for our archers to be competing in a major world archery tournament infront of home supporters, and everyone who's been selected is relishing the chance.

"It will be great for the seniors, and really exciting for our junior internationals who are just coming up through the system and wanting to prove themselves ready for a regular place on the international team."

The Dover event is the fourth leg of this year's World Cup series, and for the archers, it is the last chance of securing a place in the World Cup Grand Final, which this year takes place in Dubai in November. Only Alan Wills and Naomi Folkard, in the men's and women's recurve respectively, have a chance of a top four finish.

"But the big incentive is to win medals in their home event, and we are more than capable of that," said Eley. "We've been doing really well in the team events at the three previous World Cup events this year, with a gold, two silvers and a bronze so far, so it would be lovely to add to that tally in Dover."

Joining Williamson and Folkard in the women's recurve will be Charlotte Burgess, still only 19 and already an established international. Lining up with Wills in the men's recurve will be Larry Godfrey, who finished fourth at the Athens Olympics, and Simon Terry.

Terry was a double Olympic bronze medalist at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, who then drifted away from archery, but returned to the sport three years ago after a 10 year absence, and quickly re-established himself as an international regular competing again amongst the world's best.

GB Squad for Dover - men's recurve: Larry Godfrey, Simon Terry, Michael Peart, Alan Wills, Andy Callaway, Tom Barber; women's recurve: Naomi Folkard, Alison Williamson, Charlotte Burgess, Emma Downie, Lana Needham, Amy Oliver; men's compound: Liam Grimwood, Chris White, Neil Wakelin, Mark Franklin, James Forbes, Adam Shaw; women's compound: Nicky Hunt, Lucy Holderness, Emma Parker, Victoria Eaton, Stephanie Crang, Danielle Brown.
