Former Westmount College Severely Damaged By Fire

Monday, 24 September 2007
The former Westmount college in Folkestone Road was severely damaged by fire on Sunday afternoon. It was the third time fire crews had been called to the building in less than 24 hours.

On Saturday, while other fire-fighters were still dealing with the blaze which devastated the former United Reformed Church building in the town, less than a mile away, crews were called to reports of smoke coming from Westmount. Twice they put the fires out.

But at about 2pm on Sunday, flames and smoke were seen coming from the roof and windows, and it took several hours to bring the blaze under control.

There have been many reports in the past of children and youths gaining access to the building, which has been empty for a long time.

Safety inspectors will now be called in to decide whether the building should be demolished.
