Fire Damages Former Church

Saturday, 22 September 2007
Fire has caused extensive damage to the former United Reformed Church in Dover High Street.

The blaze broke out at about 12 noon and several fire crews from Dover and the surrounding area were quickly on the scene. At the height of the blaze, flames were seen shooting out through the roof of the building. The main street has been closed to traffic.

The church, which was called St Columba, closed in August 2003 when the congregation joined with members of the two Methodist churches in Dover, London Road and Tower Hamlets, to form The Beacon Church on the London Road site.

St Columba was sold to developers and work has been going on to convert the church into flats. It was being re-named St Martin's Court and it is understood that the first show flat was due to be open to the public in the next couple of weeks.

It is expected that fire-fighters will be at the scene for most of the day.
