Denis Weaver Dies Aged 76

Denis Weaver, who was head of the Buckland Press Group and supported many aspects of life in the community, has died. He was 76.

Mr Weaver was born in Dover and educated at Dover Grammar School for Boys. He went into horticulture before joining his family's printing and stationery business, which later joined with Buckland Press.

He served as a governor of several local schools, including Astor, where he was chairman for 23 years, the Boys Grammar School where he was chairman for five years, and River Primary School.

He was a long-standing member of the Rotary Club of Dover, served as President, and was elected District President. He helped raise thousands of pounds to treat blindness in India.

He was also a member of Dover Operatic and Dramatic Society, and was President for 21 years. He chaired committees which organised the Son et Lumiere production at Dover Castle in 1961 and the entertainment in Dover to mark the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977.

A keen Conservative Party supporter - his home at River was often used as a campaign headquarters on election days - he was elected to Dover Borough Council in 1968, serving for two years.

Mr Weaver was appointed as a magistrate in 1968, served as Deputy Chairman of the Dover and East Kent Magistrates, chairman of the Kent Branch of the Magistrates' Association and a member of the council of the national Magistrates' Association.

He was also a member of the Dover panel of General Commissioners of Income Tax.

He and his wife, Liz, were married in 1963 and had three sons and a daughter.

Mr Weaver died on Tuesday night, 9 October, having been admitted to hospital that afternoon.
