MP And Council Representatives To Meet Home Secretary Over Prison Proposal

Tuesday, 10 October 2006
Dover MP Gwyn Prosser and representatives from Dover District Council are to meet Home Secretary Dr John Reid next week in a last-ditch attempt to stop the former Connaught Barracks being turned into an open prison.

The plan was mentioned by Dr Reid in the House of Commons on Monday while he was outlining the measures being taken to address the current prison crisis.

Protestors have already made their feelings known to prisons minister Gerry Sutcliffe during his visit to the town last Thursday. At the time he said a decision on whether or not the proposal would go ahead could be expected "within days".

But district council leader Cllr Paul Watkins has now said the meeting with Dr Reid will take place on Monday at 5pm.
