Fog Detectors Installed Along A20

Tuesday, 28 March 2006
Drivers using the A20 between Dover and Folkestone will benefit from new fog detectors and advance warning signs that are being installed by the Highways Agency.

These fog detectors will sense moisture in the air, which will then trigger the fog sign to flash up in red, amber and white. This will alert drivers to the poor visibility on the road ahead. Work to put the new fog detectors and signs in place started on Monday 20 March and is due to be completed within eight weeks.

This work is being carried out during the day from 9:30am to 4pm Monday to Saturday, when traffic flows are lower.

For the safety of road users and the workforce, there will be one lane closed on either the east or westbound carriageway at separate times whilst the signs are put in place. Throughout the works, a temporary speed limit of 50mph will be in place.

Ing Fischer, Highways Agency area manager, said: "The new signs and fog detectors will warn drivers about poor visibility well in advance, and help to reduce the risk of accidents on the A20."
