Extra Funding To Boost Recycling In Dover District

Friday, 15 December 2006
Dover District Council has been offered funding to encourage recycling across the area thanks to WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme), helping communicate its recycling messages more effectively throughout the district. This is one of 74 projects in England, which were successful in bidding to receive funding to promote household recycling and increase participation in recycling and waste minimisation initiatives.

DDC successfully bid for WRAP funding for a range of initiatives including: to carry out a doorstepping campaign to promote the kerbside service, where residents will be visited by a trained canvasser and be advised on what and how to recycle; to advertise recycling services to raise awareness of what people can recycle locally and where; to raise awareness of recycling services through leaflets educating residents on why, what and when to recycle; and to promote its recycling service through local road shows.

WRAP will be distributing £13 million of funding to both Local Authorities and local community groups over the next two years to promote household recycling and reduce the amount of waste being buried in landfill.

Cllr Nicholas Kenton, DDC Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "This is great news for the district and will provide an important boost to the good work of the Waste Services team. Engaging the public is one of the most important challenges we face if we are to continue to improve our recycling performance and meet national targets."

A spokesperson from WRAP said: "Over the next two years, the funding of more than 74 local communication initiatives covering 131 local authorities in England will hopefully deliver significant increases in recycling and participation rates by delivering clear messages at a local level."
