Britain's retailers are experiencing an epidemic of shoplifting, fuelled by the economic downturn and organised crime gangs stealing valuable merchandise to order by travelling large distances to major shopping centres.
Theft from shops climbed to a nine-year high last year and the value of goods taken in each incident increased by nearly two thirds as retailers face a £511 million annual bill for criminality targeting their businesses, including rising online fraud and robbery.
The British Retail Consortium's annual crime survey also exposes a lack of confidence in police to tackle theft from shops with more than 90 per cent of all shoplifting offences going unreported by store and prosecution rates of fraudsters considered "woeful".
The sharp increase in theft by customers, which accounts for 82 per cent of all crime against stores, coincides with evidence of an increase in so-called "poverty crime" with food and alcohol being stolen in areas of high deprivation.

29 October 2014 17:13273842I do have some sympathy, pushing anyone on benefits all around the country because your council choose not to provide suitable housing in the area you live in is wrong.
Imagine you are this mother or any other come to that having to deal with four children who are settled in their school and are having to move away from all their friends.-----------------------------------------------------------------------

To live in a 4 bedroomed flat in Central London is out of the reach of anyone earning less than 6 figures so clearly a move further out was the only way forward. I find her ungrateful in the extreme after being granted asylum from a war torn country to expect to live the life of Reilly at the taxpayer's expense. The article states that the father is in contact with the children but no mention of any financial contributions that he makes.

Dover has stopped paying the £1000 incentive that they used to grant for downsizing because the pot has dried up.

Moving out of London can be a great way to make a fresh start in other parts of the country.
The Out of London Scheme encourages applicants to move to areas outside of London where there is lower demand for social housing. Costs for travelling to the area and viewing the property will be paid for. Financial assistance for moving will also be provided up to an agreed level. People joining the scheme are likely to be allocated accommodation relatively quicker than in London.

Millions of pounds of taxpayers' money is being spent by local authorities trying to encourage people to move from social housing to the private sector, as Britain faces a massive social housing shortage.
Tenants in larger council homes are also being tempted to downsize to smaller properties with cash payments of up to £3,000 per bedroom if they agree.
