Happy New Year from the Chancellor: George Osborne targets working-age poor again as he insists Britain must make £25bn more welfare cuts in 2014
Half the cuts to come from the welfare budget
George Osborne was accused of targeting the poor and vulnerable and sparing the rich as he outlined £25bn of new spending cuts, with half of them coming from the welfare budget.
The Chancellor kicked off the political year with a bleak warning that the job of clearing the deficit is "not even half done." But his suggestion of £12bn of welfare cuts in the two years after the 2015 election provoked an angry backlash from the Liberal Democrats and pressure groups.
Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, accused Mr Osborne of launching an "unrealistic, unfair" attack on the poor while demanding no sacrifices from the wealthy. He told his monthly press conference: "You've got a Conservative Party now who are driven, it seems to me, by two very clear ideological impulses. One is to remorselessly pare back the state - for ideological reasons. Secondly - and I think they are making a monumental mistake in doing so - they say the only section in society which will bear the burden of further fiscal consolidation are the working-age poor."
Mr Clegg added: "You've got an agenda on the right which appears to believe in cuts for cuts' sake, and an agenda on the left which believes in spending for spending's sake."

Then whose fault is it that the general public have this (incorrect) view/perception ?
I must be honest, I find it difficult to believe that only 0.7% of the welfare budget is claimed fraudulently.
I wouldn't have called it Tory brain-washing, I'm sure these misconceptions (if that's what they are) have been held for years, not just the last 2.

The slagging off of people on Benefit has been marketed so successfully and constantly to prepare everyone
for the IDS policies.
It has been successfully indoctrinated in every level of society so much so people like Roger do not believe it
or choose not to believe it.
We have had the `few` and others on this Forum when told the benefit fraud is less than 1% responding
with........``Our taxes are being spent on the benefit scroungers so they can enjoy boozing smoking,50 inch flat TV`s
mobile phones, laying in bed whilst their neighbours go to work.designer clothes etc,etc
Truth is never popular or sounds clever.

governments have always liked to divide and rule, benefit claimants are the latest to be used as pawns in the game.
takes people's minds of the power brokers that run the country.

Met police want water cannon ready to use in Britain by summer
Theresa May has rejected a request for government funds to buy water cannon, letter to Boris Johnson reveals

Britain's biggest police force wants water cannon ready to be used on the streets of mainland Britain by this summer, official letters reveal.
The documents also show that a request for the government to fund the controversial purchase has been rejected by the home secretary, Theresa May.
Public consultations on the deployment of water cannon will begin within weeks and a formal decision made next month.
Water cannon have not previously been available to police on mainland Britain, and their use has been limited to Northern Ireland.
In a letter sent on Monday by Boris Johnson to May, the London mayor explains his reasoning, saying it is a direct result of the 2011 riots that started in London before spreading, becoming the most serious and widespread riots to hit England in decades.
