the question for the conservatives should be how come such a big proportion of the 4 million UKIP voters went over to labour?

Keith, The tories (or T May) misjudged where those UKIP votes went back to, but also T May misjudged J Corbyn.
To be fair, I also felt J Corbyn and his backers would end up with a conservative landslide.
With us all being proved wrong, it's time now to see where we go next.
It appears T May is putting party before Govt in wanting to remain in number 10, attempting a deal with the DUP.
With this we are already seeing the Irish parties falling out, and of course with the DUP in Govt no matter how loosely is calling into question the irish situation, and how the Govt cant now be inpartial.
Many problems lie ahead

The nationalists will be miffed that loyalists have the ear of Government, John Major is right in warning of the peace process breaking up.

I'm awfully sorry to tell you this but crime is DOWN. Apart from newly invented non-crime like 'hate crime' one suspects, though if we're talking about whining Mohammedans after Manchester and London Bridge ,I don't suppose that the Japanese in the USA were flavour of the month shortly after Pearl Harbour.
Evening all... Do we have the bona-fide (by which I mean they haven't been "seasonally adjusted" figures from CSEW for 2014, 2015 & 2016 yet? In the meantime...

Police forces 'failed to record 40,000 crimes' BBC report, see the link above. Which is why you should interrogate the data and satisfy yourself that the true picture is being painted. After all,
Insp Zoe Billingham, of HMIC, said the Kent force had "taken its eye off the ball as a result of poor supervision" and audit inconsistencies had led to "false-positive" results.Just because you don't take an interest in politics doesn't mean that politics won't take an interest in you. PERICLES.

So true, and even more glaringly obvious now given that the brown-leather-trousered one decided against any kind of direct contact with the survivors and families of the Grenfell Tower fire. The woman clearly lacks empathy and is incapable of any kind of spontaneous engagement with people, preferring the structured and rigidly controlled environments of the cabinet office, parliament or media studios.
But I'm not psychoanalysing here: this is increasingly the case with politicians, many of whom have simply chosen politics as a 'career' and have little understanding of the world outside university, business and political office. What's more, despite their pathetic attempts at individualisation (Miliband's T-shirt or Cameron's rolled-up shirt-sleeves anyone?) and their frequent assertions that 'we are all in this together', they are virtually indistinguishable and, as a political class, have little but contempt for the smelly and awkward mass, which they view as merely a resource to be managed.

Should anyone be suffering general election withdrawal symptoms, or needing to prepare for the next one, the BBC Parliament channel is today re-running BBC coverage from 1997. Paxman neatly sums up the tone to Cecil Parkinson: 'If you can't even hold Hove something seismic is happening.'

I remember that night very well the exit poll hinted at a Labour Landslide which Jezza Paxman threw at Michael Portillo who smarmingly replied "we are better at winning elections than opinion polls". Over next three hours it became clear that it was becoming a rout and Portillo still had a reptilian smile playing across his lips but his eyes were glazed. About 2. 30 am Paxman said to Portillo "are you ready for the hemlock yet"? I had to get up early for work in the morning but it was captivating to see those entitled ones getting the thumbs down from the voters. The highlight for me was seeing David Mellor getting the bums rush.

Ah, remember it well Howard. I fought former Barnsley West & Penistone constituency that night. It was a crushing defeat to Blair. We had the three Barnsley constituencies being counted in the Barnsley Leisure Centre at the same time. My good fortune that night was not to come third after Lib Dems.
