#1342, a bit of a hand grenade into the discussion, Barry.
We all agree that a safety net is needed to protect the vulnerable and to give those who have fallen on hard times something to tide them over until things improve.
Vic has it right in #1341. There are many families with both parents working long hours, struggling to keep their heads above water, living next door to other able bodied families who don't work yet are better off because of their benefits. Everyone knows instinctively what is fair and what isn't- to me that is UNFAIR.
There should be no restrictions placed on peoples' ability to improve themselves. Giving people the opportunity to coast along with no effort is doing just that.

Peter - I agree about a safety net but things have gone much too far from that to the degree that socialist policies are out and out dangerous to the poor and, indeed all of us who are not rich. The rich of course will be unaffected as they can clear off out of the country or use their wealth to shelter themselves from the evils perpetrated by left wing governments.

peter;
there isn't a poster on here who doesn't disagree with you last comments, in fact quite a few(even so called lefties) have agreed the benefits system is in need of urgent reform, how this is done appears to be the problem for all parties.
frank fields(labour)attempted it eventualy dropped
I D S (tory) now attempting it in a very mild form and even he is having
problems getting anywhere with it
barryw;
we will always disagree on labour or tory govts
tory govts always hit the poor as we are seeing and always see

Other trades being targeted are hairdressers.restaurants in south east, auto mechanics
in Scotland,Grocers in north west and wales etc etc..

[You may have heard this here first, but humility forbids...]
Two things...
1-We are often told that what happens in America comes our way soon enough;they sneeze...we catch the cold etc.
2-The 'wonderful' and 'wondrous' idea of raising the Income Tax Threshold.
Well these very pigeons I spoke of many moons ago are beginning to come home. The Republican Presidential Candidate is currently embroiled in yet another 'snafu'. He was filmed talking at a fund-raising event, behind closed doors and inevitably the film now has hit-the-fan.
He is heard, quite distinctly, dismissing some 47% of the US population as their being a lost cause to one half of the Party Political machine;i.e. The Republicans.
He characterises this portion of the population as spongers, of supposing themselves, of disposing themselves and believing themselves "entitled" to state aid in all matters pertaining to health care, food and housing.
He neatly wraps this parcel up with this 'bow'...
"These are people who pay no income tax."
Hopefully the more obvious flaw in his reasoning you do not need pointed-up to you, but he also fails to consider the Bi££ions in bail-out money that has gone to his big-business supporters.

I don't think it was a 'gaff', as such. He meant every word and the sentiment behind them, admits only that his phraseology was off. He explains this in the top video in the article during a 'hastily arranged press conference".

The Monaco problem.
More than 2,000 Britons are costing the UK economy £ One Billion in lost tax revenue.
Some of them have been awarded Knighthoods and made donations to the Tory Party
despite Camerons `pledge` to close Finance Johnnies tax loopholes.
533 company directors run their companies from Monaco and pay millions into the
Tory Party coffers. One donated £ Five million to the Tory Party funds and one loaned
his helicopter to Cameron for his election campaign.
Funny Cameron and Osborne are not keen to close the Finance Johnnies Tax
loopholes !!!!!!
Is anyone surprised they are looking after the elite greedy pigs ?
NB...Monaco is just the tip of the iceberg of Tax avoidance.....think of the real figure
of lost revenue due to Tax avoidance..............

Andrew Mitchell Chief Whip ( local tory cllrs are in denial of this position ) the Mr `Nice,
Compassionate former Minister for Overseas Aid appears to be a Jekyll and Hyde
showing his basic tory traits.
A former UN peacemaker but as a young school prefect nick named ``Thrasher``has
been reported to have insisted he ride his bike through the No 10`s Main Gates but
when armed police ushered him to a side gate called them....`` "morons".
"Best you learn your f****** place. You don't run this f****** government. You're
f****** plebs,"
Cabinet Ministers...so out of touch...appear to be convinced ``we`` also ``best know
our ******* place`
How is your `forelock this morning ?

Tory Treasurer wants UK to become more like a Tax Haven.
Lord Fink ( don`t think he does `fink` ) calls for Tax laws to be changed at a time it is
revealed 68 MP`s and Peers are directors of firms linked to offshore juridictions.
Fink has companies in the Cayman Islands and has lobbied Osborne to cut taxes on
`invisible` earnings .............say no more..........

This is outrageous!
Shouldn't the Government clamp down on tax-avoidance? With Austerity being inflicted on the People, our Country bankrupt through Debt, and some people just go on squirreling the money out of the Country to avoid taxes.

From Sky News:
"The chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation, John Tully, has told Sky News that Chief Whip Andrew Mitchell is not fit to hold office and should resign."
The Police aren't taking any nonsense!
This man clearly broke the Law, he verbally assaulted Police officers, people who serve the Country, considering himself above them. But he is not above the Law!
He is denying everything that he said, effectively calling the Police liars.
He should do the right thing and quit office.
