This is cosmetic & political rather than technical. There was no obligation to have them burgundy coloured even when we were in the EU.
Before too long passport booklets will become obsolete as borders go digital. There's been a RFID in the passport since 2006, the 'details' page being in machine readable format long before that.
Time to bite the bullet and reintroduce the biometric ID card?

Absolutely, but paperless and why not even cardless surely? We already have retina scans and fingerprint technology in regular use (the latter to debit the parent's account with the cost of the child's school meal, for example), so why not spitoons in conjunction with a DNA database? One gob at the border to identify you provides spin-off advantages, such as cross-matching against whatever Nicky Alexander has discovered this week, healthcare advice and so on: "Welcome to the UK, Miss, sorry about your cold but we understand congratulations are in order."

DNA database? Now that would be a step in the right direction!

The celebration of the blue passport is a gentle reminder of how low the bar has dropped now. As Bob points out, it was never compulsory anyway.
I am a very big fan of national ID cards - just call them "Access to services card" or "Residency card" and they'll fly off the shelves. Call them an ID card, and they'll be resisted. It would resolve so many problems and remove this nonsense of providing a utility bill etc.

Goodness me, there can't have been so many totalitarian lambs in one place since the last meeting of the Young Pioneers of China.

What's the issue, when schools already have their pupils' fingerprints, linked to name, age, address, dob and a bank account? The introduction of this, for cashless meals, met with far less clamour than the prospect of detentions on Saturdays!

I have never really understood the privacy or big brother arguments, maybe that is because I have never had a bad brush with authority or the law.
I do not care what colour our passports are, mine ran out a few years ago and I have no intention of renewing it.

I blame the parents. Truly. Moral and political agency are still with us, aren't they?

Great excitement in the Button household today - the new passport arrived! Maroon, but sans EU. The process was speedy and pretty good, with updates on the application's progress, although they didn't credit the time for surrendering the old one early. I had to smile - it came back 'secure delivery', which evidently Pritti defines as 'Polish guy in his estate car'.

The waiver being talked about here:
https://mobile.twitter.com/CharlieElphicke/status/1237109744785031170, is to do with safety and security declarations. Now, Transit declarations double as S&S ones anyway, so that's another jolly good reason to move goods under Transit. No waiver + no Transit = a requirement to tell t'other side what's heading their way, 2 hours in advance of departure; not good.
I do worry from time to time that he isn't quite all there.

But Pablo this poses another conundrum.........who or what do we blame for the problems we encounter in the future? Coronavirus if it’s the remainer or Brexit the leaver?
