"So what was the cause of these other excess deaths?"
I think you are missing the point of using an average, its kind of meaningless on its own, do you ask why so few died in 1st QTR 2016? Approx to 2,500 below 5 year average!

I never really understood the thinking behind the Nightingale Hospitals, surely it would have been more suitable to take over a hotel and install whatever equipment was needed. I guess it was simply for misplaced propaganda purposes.

Or perhaps for wider corridors and fewer doors/turns.

That is brilliant and so true, I guess it was made before the disinfectant carp from Trump.

Any one else sick and tired of hearing how many people have died when many more have officially recovered, seems the doom and gloom merchants are in their element on here and in the media.

That article's under house arrest, and will only be released if you bribe its gaoler.

The 2m rule was always nonsense on stilts. Whereas The Telegraph quotes an anonymous government minister as claiming 'the response genuinely has been led by the science', it's clear that it's genuinely been led by a beginners' class in evidence-based policy-making gathered outside the room having a fag before the tutor arrives for the introductory lesson.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2020/05/01/two-metre-rule-reviewed-amid-hope-relaxed-restrictions-could/
Prof Dingwall's words here (that the 2m rule 'does not have validity and has never had much of an evidence base') is probably better characterised in his previous statement that the rule was 'conjured up out of nowhere' (
https://metro.co.uk/2020/04/25/two-metre-social-distancing-rule-conjured-nowhere-professor-claims-12609448/ ).
Yet so easily are the herd led that you see people absurdly jumping into the road to avoid someone they now regard, thanks to Al de Pfeffel's armoury of war metaphors, as a potential enemy. As Jim Royle might have said, 'evidence, my arse.'

The mantra 'led by the science' is trotted out at every conceivable opportunity. Scientific opinions vary, as they do on almost every topic. Every government will have been led by the science to some degree. If they all followed a universally accepted wisdom, then why did our approach under Boris and Cummings differ so markedly in the crucial stages from that of so many other countries? They chose the science that suited their politics the best: with disastrous effect.
This government is by its nature one more of spin than substance. Coronavirus will expose that more ruthlessly than any other event could. Come year end, though, I suspect that more Brexit dogma will run it a close second.

I think calling them a bunch of stupid, selfish idiots is being generous on my part, it is people like this that have actually caused far to many of the deaths.
A great shame doctors would feel duty bound to treat them rather than leave them to the fate these people deserve.
