David is so right, public spending has just not been cut enough so the deficit has only reduced by about a quarter (not a third as Osborne said in the budget...)
The problem for his critics on the left is that it would be far worse now with a higher deficit and higher debt if they had their way or the Darling plan. We would also all be paying higher interest rates and no growth...

charlie is peddling the untruth about the deficit being cut by a third, whether through misunderstanding or political gain is to be decided.

He is repeating Osborne's figures.
The problem we have is how figures get interpreted and whether you use real terms/cash terms and even if real terms it is different if you use CPI rather than RPI.... Is it a percentage of GDP or as a percentage of actual spending. I think you get the message - you need to get the right baseline for any claim for it to be meaningful. I suspect though that regardless of the actual figure Osborne deliberately rounded up to a third.

whichever way you look at it
even in osbournes on credible words or so he said
we would see the growth
now hes saying we wont for 2 years
it must go down as one of the most negative budgets for some time
on the back of ossys words of wisdom a year ago of believe in me

It comes back to too little, too slow and not enough supply side reform Keith. Nothing of what needs to be done would meet your approval and your lot, BallsUp and RedEd, the former being the architect to Brown the Builder of Britain's current structural problems, would make things far worse.

Spending is up in cash terms, down in real terms. We need it down in real terms as well as in cash terms.

Barry- you mention frequently 'Brown' the architect of the nation's current financial woes. In fact the whole of the current coalition cabinet and especially the PM and the Chancellor are always referring to to this. But then so has every government in the history of the universe blamed its predecessors for its problems. This is not unusual it's typical-I can imagine Mr Cameron's successor saying exactly the same thing about him and ad infinitum. What's the point of keep mentioning this-why not just get on with the job ahead of them instead of all this time wasting and excuse making.

No excuses Richard - it is simply a statement of fact and how we got into this state is an important lesson to learn. Sadly a lot of people have not learnt it.
As I have said before the serious and, indeed, stupid, policy errors of Brown are well documented. Take just one, - not balancing the current account in the growth cycle when it should have been done. Plain stupidity that can only have been perpetuated by someone who believed he had changed the normal and natural cycle.

barry is completely missing the point made by richard, the nation is heartily sick of hearing about what happened under the past regime, they want to know what is going to be done now and in the future.
charlie is the worst blue offender, every question or statement he makes in the commons includes "under the last government" or "under labour".

Barry- but surely the statement of fact you refer to has been the truth in every government. Blair blamed Major and Thatcher,Thatcher blamed Callaghan- Wilson blamed Heath-Heath blamed Wilson and in turn Wilson blamed A D Home. It was just the same thing as the present mud slinging. Why do they indulge in this petty smearing stuff? Nobody is interested if Brown screwed the whole thing up or not.(I expect that he blames Blair!).
The only people to get off on this are members of the accusing party. The general population don't give a damn. They just want a solution now-not buck passing which is ALL it is.

The general population deserve all they get. It was they who elected these fools over the years. We're facing the biggest financial and energy emergency since the war and all they can do is to pass laws which clamp down on free speech, bang on about the ridiculous olympics which is money down the drain, tinker with education, borrow more, impoverish our children's future and still believe that they have the power to change the weather by taxing us more.
Stupid, stupid people and I don't vote for stupid people.
