this statue has always been bedecked with flowers, why not this year?
these two photos are a small part of the gateway flats gardens, usually a riot of colour.
money is paid to the management agents to address this.
Oh dear that looks very bland and boring Dover is always better with beautiful flowers another cut maybe?

don't think so mel, the gateway residents pay over money for such things as attractive gardens.
i think the one at the top may be down to the harbour board, usually they are very good.

Well done with those pictures Howard..tells the story. Yes its all very sad, must be due to the cuts alright as Mel says there, although there is some planting going on down on the seaward side of the main through road as you approach the docks. That might offer some hope of a revival, although they seem to have been doing that for ages....the summer season of visitors will be over before they move beyond there if they keep going at that speed.
They seem to be doing a big job down there but the rest of the town is barren.
its a shame Dover doesnt come together and all chip in either seeds or plants , cuttings etc to make dover look gorgeous think we must do something after the latest remarks that the town has received thats all over the tv .

The seafront at St Brelades. This is what Dover could and should look like.

Those gardens don't actually belong to the Gateway flats. They are maintained (or not!) by Dover District Council.
What a contrast in those pics!

There are plenty of flowering shrubs that could be planted to give all round the year colour so much cheaper to maintain than bedding plants.

i think that has been said before on here jan, probably by you.
anything is better than looking at grey soil, the walk from the nick through to pencester road is demoralising.
i have been to many poor countries and they can always stretch to plants and flowers.

Nothing cheers up a dismal area than bright coloured plants, it makes a place look cared for.
Yes, I admit to mentioning shrubs several times.

Howards photos are quite extraordinary. Dover appears to have given up trying altogether. Photos from yesteryear show a blaze of colour but no more it seems. Even the shell shattered wasteland of the Western Front gave birth to a canopy of poppies. Perhaps we should start up a new contest. Where other towns and villages vie for the best floral displays, such as Deal in Bloom, we could have our own Dover in Gloom contest. The recent photos of the bare earth in the Market Square were attributed to the beds lying fallow. Could it be that all of Dover is lying fallow awaiting the planting of the next potato crop? Sue told us that River was resplendent with flowers so perhaps the answer is to install little wooden direction signs in the forlorn flowerbeds pointing towards River and saying "Flowers this way 2 miles."

I am not a flower lover, but it is nice to see some colour around the streets, but it will possibly said that they can not aford it. but I would rather have the toilets open then flowers. I
ecpect someone will say flowers come from a differant buget that the toilets.
But why can't we have both

I wonder what would happen if the empty beds were planted up over night by the plant fairy, would the bigwigs complain or rub their hands with glee.

Yes nice pic Andrew from Boulogne. Love that old town over there and generally yes they do great summer displays of colour over there in France. Le Touquet for example is a blaze of colour all summer long, although I know that's more of a resort. But so far this year Dover has been disappointing. The roundabouts too with the "advertise here" signs seem to have just been abandoned.
Pic of flowers in Le Touquet last year on a wet and blustery day...
also note the light in the ground. lights all over the place like this light up the florals and trees at night. V nice.
