We had a total of 12 people turn up today, 9 of which were from Dover (That's 9 out of a district of 40,000 people).
The turn out is now sadly regularly lower than it had been previously, probably due to the loss of the minibus allowing volunteers to attend from Folkestone.
Still we got 60 bags of rubbish from the Dour today which was very good for just 12 people. Areas covered: Buckland Bridge, Barton Path, Morrisons, Police Station, K College and Pencester.

Well done Phil and all the volunteers

What would it be like without you.?
I'd love to help but am afraid age and arthritis won't let me.

the loss of the minibus is one factor, but a lot of people go away once schools pack up, additionally some could have looked out of their window at breakfast time and decided it was going to be miserable all day.

That part of the river seems to attract the most unusual items, particularly for where it is. Here is a popular picture from years ago showing Ken Tranter doing the business in the same stretch of river. I think Ken was mayor at the time although cant quite remember for sure. But his efforts attracted all the newspapers and yours truly...hence the picture. Ian was also involved.
Not sure now who the other chap in shot was.
The voluntary cleaning goes on...

This great group were just gathering when I went to Morrisons this morning, it looked like Charlie Elphick was also with them when I came out.

He was chatting at the time so he might not have gone paddling with the others.

69 bags of rubbish yesterday, also a bike, supermarket trolley, traffic cone, scooter, car exhaust, Lottery shop display stand...etc.... We cleared Buckland Mill, Barton Path, Halfords, Morrisons, Dour Street, Ladywell, K College and Pencester.
The core turnout is still very low though and there were only about nine of us. Fortunately a few chaps from Veolia came along to lend a hand or we couldn't have got that lot done. Holidays are partly to blame, but the lack of minibus to collect volunteers from Folkestone is really being felt.
And yes Charlie and his daughter turned up for an hour to lend a helping hand - thanks. And no, I'm afraid I don't have a photo before anyone asks!

i'm not sure charlie is right here in blaming morrison's, people get their shopping and
take it straight home. the stuff we see in the river is a mixed bag of fast food containers, bottles, cans mixed up with odd things like traffic cones and builders detritus.
maybe one of the volunteers will comment on it.

I also think that comment is unfair, as Howard says the two traffic cones that I recently saw there were certainly not from Morrisons and they have a couple of bins right outside and what about the Asda bags I have also seen.
I have been told Morrisons make a donation towards the clear-up but do not know who it goes to or even if that statement is true.
