Checking that one out Bob. Not one I've seen promoted by any of local councils or KCC. Sounds good though.

I know that the thread has gone off on a tangent, but is it wise to allow lorry (or any) drivers to use twitter while driving?

Getting back to the half a million that is now promised for the National War Memorial I have looked back over some of the many threads on the subject and nowhere can I find an indication of total cost for the project only that English Heritage have blown hot and cold on the idea over the years.

According to John Pegg , £15m was the original sum. The funding would have to come from Commonwealth , National or public subscription funding.
The Project is identified the in the Western Heights Heritage Guidance.

Excellent idea and one which has my full support FWIW. Same as with tarting up the Maison Dieu.
The quicker Dover starts marketing itself on its nationally almost unique range of 2000 years of history/heritage and tries to attract people here because it's different to everywhere else rather than 'we too have a sodding Nando' the better.
(NB Other providers of fast bland high calorie food are available)

Too late. Been saying DTIZ could have been something special years ago but who in their right mind is going to visit Dover via its clogged roads or submerged railway for a Nando's and a movie. The heritage of Dover has been swapped for port expansion and the town will simply become a truck stop. The high street will vanish just like the Prince of Wales Pier. If you want heritage and history then visit Deal or Sandwich.

I do not agree with report number 12 Dover has a lot to offer more then Deal and Sandwich.I like both places but just our Castle without the rest would take a good day or more to go round and to tell the history of it would take a week,

The heritage and history are already here (by definition, you can't create them!).
What is needed is something for the residents that will also attract visitors, this is what DTIZ should have been instead of being largely a collection of national chainstores and eateries from the lower end of aspirations.
We need, and could have had, is one of
these.

More to the point Ray we COULD have had this
http://www.mcarthurglen.com/uk/ashford-designer-outlet/en/
Which was driven away with the connivance of DDC after pressure from the Evil Empire at Harbour House who were pushing the De Bradelei Wharf at the time!
Unfortunately (on legal advice) I forget who was Chief Executive at the time and where he found employment on leaving his position with the council .............

McArthur Glen would have been up at Whitfield and I have been told that town centre traders as well as DHB put a lot of pressure on fending them off.

Correct Howard. There was also pressure from the butchers, bakers and candlestick-makers that such 'competition' would stop Dover being the thriving shopping centre we all know it to be today.
