Yes Tom, Protect Shield is a fake anti-virus program that does a fake scan on your PC and prompts you to go to its website to purchase the software that will remove it. I Googled several sites like the one in your link which tell you exactly that - and then prompt you to buy software to remove it!
They are often passed on by forums based on Wordpress - anyone know if this one is?
I'm using the paid for version of AVG, often free anti-virus software isn't as good.

Thanks again Ray.
I did use the free AVG when I was on IE/Windows and it worked very well indeed and would heartily recommend it.

btw, found out my PC was chugging along this morning as it was downloading service pack 3 for MS Office, so slow I couldn't use any Office programs!

It was protect shield that appeared on my computer this morning, alittle green shield appeared on the icons later, but when A.V.G did it's thing that has now gone, hopefully it was caught in time and i am now rid of the problem. I did a whole computer scan, and the offending item was in the virus vault at the finish.

Are you using AVG free edition humphy?
I did a whole computer scan also and I have got a trojan horse cryptic.DYR virus in my virus vault. Is that the same virus as you?
I've never looked in the virus vault before so don't know if it is the protect shield virus.

I have Norton anti virus, the whole paid for package. I checked the log and a trojan was blockaed at about the same time this morning. I realised what was happening when I saw protect shield and shut the computer down. hopefully this has stopped it.
No comment from Paul B on this yet !

Norton should have stopped Protect Shield from running I would have thought, bit worrying that it didn't. I would do a complete computer scan if you haven't already, just to be sure it's not still there.

I should have added that my computer is set to auto scan every Tuesday at 10.00am and did not show any problems.

I was away from the computer most of yesterday so wasnt aware of this.
I myself am experiencing no problems whatsoever. Yesterday morning early I did the extended frontpage using Mozilla Firefox with no problem at all...afterwards I used Internet Explorer on the forum section with again no sign of anything untoward.
With the help of my ace tech man Chris T we will have a look further today to see if there is any internal problem...so far we see nothing of note. We sadly get attempts from those who want to hack us periodically, which is of course a great pity, but sadly this appears to be a by-product of the modern age.

I didn't turn on my PC yesterday (my day down the town) . I logged on this afternoon to other sites that I use and all was fine but when I logged on to the Forum tonight I got this Protect Shield flashing about all over the place and I could not get rid of it, I could not shut down either so I just hit the close button.
I switched on again and it was still there and it appeared to be part of the official Windows Defender program. I still couldn't get rid of it so I did a system restore to a couple of days ago and now things appear to be OK. I run the run the McAfee paid for Security and also have Search and Destroy.

I've had this warning twice more now, on reloading the letters page. Once late last night and then again this morning. I don't think it's a false psitive as it's warning of a specific trojan, usually with a false positive it reports it as a possible variant of something. Also never had before on this site.

Great pity. We will do what we can to fix it..if it is fixable...we obviously hope so. I myself am seeing nothing at all. I have the McAfee system running, and I havent had so much as a warning of a problem even.

I got a new PC yesterday (yippeeee!) with McAfee and have seen no problems with this either. I wonder if those having problems haven't set their security levels high enough.
