So you think we have a democratic voting system
Thatcher never got over 33% of the vote, but still come to power .is that democratic?

Correction KeithB
In 1979 she had 43.9%
In 1983 it was 42.4%
In 1987 it was 42.2%
Even John Major managed 41.9%
Blair managed 43.2% in his 1997 landslide
That dropped to 40.7% in 2001, then to 35.4% in 2005 - yet still managed 65 seat overall majority.... such is the current imbalance.

ahhh but Keith, the next largest party got only 35%, with 65% voting against them and the other were substantially worse.
Incidentally - knock out the minor parties and individuals who were not competing to form a UK government by standing all over the country then you will have a totally different picture. Bear in mind as well, a lot of the people who vote for these minor parties do not expect to be voting for a 'winner' or to elect the government but do so as a protest or just to abvoid making a serious decision - the LibDems used to get a lot of those.

i think keith's figures refer to the electorate, in other words people who could have voted.
barry
the yellows get m.p's in a lot of out of the way places because the people feel that parliament has no interest in them so they look for a candidate that will look after their interests.

No Howard, he specifically said of those voted and accepted he was wrong.
Disagree about LimpDems - in the past they got a protest vote and votes from those people who were avoiding making a serious choice. They will lose those next time, UKIP and other minorities will benefit from those.

#40 goes round in circles.
What could be more straightforward: in or out?
Would you like to ask the audience?

For those like myself who have no idea what the last few posts have been about because it is on the previous page here is a copy of #40.........
"My own view is that the questions of the pro's and cons of pulling out of the EU remain unanswred its also appears that the RMT has returned to the fold of the TUC something that the RMT distanced itself from Bob has given a view, but has a far wider agenda that just pulling out of the E.U."
