Roger.
I fully understand about why & where the cuts are coming from.
Last year the cost of HB was £10million and DDC was reimbursed that amount.
This year the government will repay 10% less than the amount paid out, leaving DDC with a £1million deficit, on top of all other cuts.
But who is making the decisions, as to who to target first, as to where the cuts are going to be made, Government or DDC?
Why only council tenants?
Why are genuine Disabled and Vulnerable, the main targets?
This move on council tenants only is because Gov/DDC, want tenants who are couples, to give up their 3 and 2 bedroom homes and obviously they cannot do that to private tenants or house owners. So it is not about reducing the deficit.
Forget the ethics of whether this is right or wrong; it will not work because councils do not have enough properties.
I would consider moving to the right adapted house but there simply is none.
This is just another worthless attack that will end up costing the tax payer more money than it will save and irreparably damage lives in the process.

I am fairly sure that it is entirely the choice of the Local Authority as to where and how these cuts are made.
So, I can, without fear of contradiction, assert that it is the Lady Mayor that wants you out of your house and home Gary.
Is it entirely coincidental that we see far fewer smiley pictures of the local great & good on these pages of late?

Tom, the mayor doesn't run the local authority, she opens fetes and cuts ribbons.

Yes David. I agree totally. The Mayor is the face of the Local Authority. Many may have preferred me to have written, "but the face of..."
The Swan of Local Government, perhaps, the constant air of serenity that gives no hint of all the paddling going on beneath the surface. Is it then a matter of, "Talk to the feet, cos the face ain't listening."?

More housing for the disabled and elderly are needed instead of those with such tiny rooms that are being built, a big reason why people do not want or are unable to downsize.

The Local Authority is Dover District Council and they don't have a Mayor, that is for the Town Councils.
I do not believe this (where the cuts are made) is a decision made by DDC.

The mayor of Dover has very little power(some say the mayor of dover role should always be that way)
Roger I look forward to your lobbying(your govt)with the views you hold

The Mayors are non political and do a great job, working hard in the community.
No blame on them from me, only thanks and appreciation.

Mayors of towns in our area are politicians elected to their position by their political cronies according to the Law of Buggins's Turn. They may be jolly good and worthy chaps and chapesses but....to call them non-political stretches the credibility a tad, Gary.

Perhaps I should have said that their role is non political or should be.

Sadly, the Dover Mayors have always been non political maybe voted in by the electorate/cllrs
but you don't see them making political statements
and most mayors work in the interests of Dover
whilst some elected have not been my cup of tea for different reasons, they all have Doverv at heart

@ Keith. So who was the last mayor of Dover who wasn't one of the cosy Labour town council club? Really Keith you do talk some twaddle sometimes.

I've never heard such nonsense Keith - of course they're political, that's how they got to be mayor - towing the party line.

Whether they are political or not is irrelevant, they are not involved with introducing cuts.
Roger.
You say "I most certainly do not agree with what is happening to those who can least afford it"
Can I ask what you have done so far to demonstrate your views on this to the council and what you intend to do in the future?

spot on gary they simply carry out ceremonial roles, politics doesn't come into it other than they were voted in as town councillors under a ticket.

I suppose I could apologise to Mrs. Smith, very well. So sorry Mrs. Smith.
But I cannot shift from sticking it to the Mayor, as such office holders are the face of local government, much as Fred the shred was to banking, they must be prepared to take the rough with the smooth.
Am I right in thinking that today is the last day to submit copy to the local press? Will there be a statement on the targeting of the cuts associated with the recent benefit reforms from an elected local government official anywhere in the local media soon?

Tom, the mayor represents the Town Council, your gripe should be with the districy council, though arguably the gripe should be with central govt (if there is a gripe).
The mayor has no more say on reforms than you or I

David, the list of people that cannot help is endless.
Nevertheless this is a local political issue, and while those with local political clout hide behind the Mayoral skirts, the office of the poor Mayor will just have to take the flak.
In any case it is not so much the reforms that are at issue here but the implementation of them at local level. Are all elected local government officials for decoration and amusement only?
