Bit of good news. Have just read this on the Kent History Forum:
"Took a walk over today and had a good chat to the foreman - turns out they're a maintenance crew. First task involves pressure washing down the structure and then they'll repaint it with a water based eco-friendly paint. All of this whilst dangling from a bosun's chair (hence the ropes attached to the tower)."

Personally I find it strange that those old masts can be object of admiration as a "sky-line" affection to Dovorians. But reading these posts here, I am slowly beginning to realise why tourists rather avoid Dover, 'cause I don't really think people here are touristic minded! Not that it bothers me personaaly, as I am not really touristic minded either, and would rather see Dover dedicated to us, but, I did think that the Councils were trying to promote visitors, and those masts are certainly no tourist attraction! It's a shame that such an uproar should be made to stop the demolishing of three ugly iron colusses, hope they come down very soon!

Some of us are tourist minded Alexander, in fact very much so, but my wings have been clipped and all chance of me working again for Dover and the businesses here are gone.
There is so much to do, it would take a while to complete, in fact as one initiative or project is completed, another comes up.
I heard yesterday from a business in Dover what the Chamber of Commerce are doing to get the street-market stalls set up and it is designed to fail.
I couldn't believe it, I really couldn't - no wonder I was sacked, I had such different ideas as to how to move Dover forward and the two guys at the top have simply no ideas - no good ones anyway.
Who is going to work on Group Travel ?
Who is going to work on a Tourism Stratagy ?
Who is going to work on a Plan of Action ?
Who is going to write to the landlords about their run-down and dilapidated buildings ?
Who is going to set up a chewing-gum cleaning schedule ?
Who is going to support, help, guide, market and promote the businesses here ?
Go to it Spencer !

Someone told me the end of May Howard.
I had secured funding from 3 different sources to promote the Market, but according to businesses I have recently spoken to, this is not being accessed and the Chamber of Commerce have instructed Spencer to call on all the businesses here to ask if they will take a stall to supplement the numbers of stalls expected - as they are not doing what I had suggested.
I had even made up the entry for the various papers and magazines promoting Dover and the market.
Why should a shop-keeper be expected to pay out for a stall, someone to run it and extra stock to put on it, when they are already paying inflated prices for rent and rates for their shop ?
The number of stalls that would have come, would have increased the footfall by quite a lot, so the shops and businesses (of all sorts) would benefit.
They really have not got a clue, not just on the market, but everything else concerning Dover.
Not my problem now of course, but the businesses are not happy and I can understand why
Brian, what is a siuuy ? I appreciated it is just a case of hitting the wrong keys, but I couldn't work it out.

roger, have now corrected it to silly.
Silly. Hmm. Bit like the idea for a market then. Just no imagination where it counts.

I'm a bit confused here; are you (Sid and Brian) saying that my ideas are silly, or the Chamber's ?
Roger
Roger, I have no confidence that a market is even close to what Dover needs to begin solving its many problems. The idea of a street market is just so dated, and, quite frankly, asking local shopkeepers to take stalls just shows how bereft of innovation and entrpeneurial spirit the town is.
If our top planners and visionaries think a few grubby market stalls, effectively owned and run by outsiders, are going to change the economic outlook for Dover they are sadly misguided.
So, to be perfectly honest, I think the idea is silly, to use your word. I never called it that.

everyone i have spoken to on the idea is in favour of a market once a week.
it is not intended to be the cure for all off the ills of dover, just a step forward.

if memory serves me right,we had a large outdoor market up coombe vally road where jewsons yard is now.within in 3 months it disapeared for good.so having one in the market square im not sure how long it will last.

brian
surely a central position like market square would be more successful than jewsons yard?

That's right Howard, in the Market Square and up Cannon Street; if enough stall-holders were happy to come here, up Biggin Street too.
It's wasn't supposed to be a panacea for all of Dover's ills, but an attempt to increase the foot-fall in the Town and therefore increase the shops' income too.
I would never have conceived that shop-keepers would be asked to have a market stall here, that's nuts to say the least; probably because they don't know how to do anything different.
All the stalls would be asked (told) to have a green and white striped cover, so they all look smart and not tatty and there would be a market manager to look after the running of it.
But as I'm not involved anymore, none of my thoughts and ideas will be taken forward.

actuall the greengrocers in worthington street are setting up a stall roger.
i think posh barry mentioned it.
i know what you are saying about shops paying rent and rates, but the market should bring in customers to market square that would not venture into worthington street.

You beat me to that Brian.
It is true Howard, the fruit & veg. people in Worthington Street have the 8 stalls on a Saturday, that's why I wasn't going to ask any more F & V stalls.
I had it all sorted out for the market, but now, who knows what'll happen ? Could turn out to be a pig's ear (but that would be a pet stall !).
