Totally agree Howard, derisory sentences indeed. I even doubt actually that these low life thugs will even be kept inside for as long as 15 months.
To a certain extent Helen is also correct though when she says that " Criminals have avoided jail for worse", but this just simply highlights once again our totally useless and inept justice system. Whatever government of the day is in office this disgraceful situation has been the case for many years now. We all know that prison is not a deterrent to the type of people such as those mentioned above, merely an inconvenience I would suspect. This has to change and it`s about time that going to jail was something to be feared and on release not somewhere that you would wish to return to in a hurry.
Without particularly wishing to turn this into a political discussion, I know that UKIP would be committed to building more prisons and actually give our public the protection and justice they deserve from anti social thugs and other criminals etc. And yes, we can afford it by drastically cutting foreign aid etc., and throwing away millions at the EU for starters.
However, nothing will change unfortunately until we have a complete change in the type of government that presides over us.

I Suppose we can expect more UKIP propaganda the nearer the election gets?

Not propaganda at all Martin, just stating facts and the truth.
However, if this worries you, you can always nullify this of course by telling us that the labour party would propose to do the same and give the public the justice they are crying out for. Not that many people would probably believe you of course, seeing as your party has failed miserably in this respect on every previous occasion.

Could not agree more Vic, a shameless act of electioneering on a non political thread, I hope this is not a taste of more to come.

It will only turn political if others post in a political manner.
That they got a custodial sentence is an improvement on the usual slap on the wrist which so many punch up artists seem to get.

i served on a jury at the old bailey in the late 70's which ended up with all 6 defendants being convicted of affray, they received sentences ranging from 5 - 10 years.
all 6 were "herberts" - bouncers from rival night clubs, no one innocent was injured or even witnessed what happened.
reading the witness statements in the report here and listened to what one member of the bar staff that night told me these 3 have got off very lightly.

Howard, you have gone from 'hearing that they were getting off with a caution', to being told that they were 'getting off full stop', to 'derisory sentences...' What is it to be? What is the latest you have heard from your imaginary informant..?
Even if the main offenders serve just 15 months in prison that's 1 x Christmas, 1 x Birthday of loved ones and their children, numerous bank holidays, summer holidays and even 1 x World Cup.Hopefully it will allow them a decent amount of time to reflect upon their actions.
All-in-all, this is a satisfactory conclusion to a horrendous incident. As I understand it, no cctv was shown to the court which would indicate that no cctv of the incident was available, despite your earlier uninformed post Howard... The three offenders pleaded guilty at the first opportunity, no doubt as a result of the evidence against them - well done Port of Dover Police..!

Diane, welcome to the forum. The use of CCTV evidence in court requires a laundry list of conditions to be satisfied; one small omission such as a warning sign being obscured will result in the footage being ruled inadmissable. So just because it wasn't presented as evidence doesn't mean it didn't exist.
I'm sure the main World Cup matches will be shown in prison.
There are two sides to every story; I often wonder why some people get more sociable when in drink and others turn into animals. If 15 months is enough that these thugs don't re-offend then job done. If they do it again after release then the key should be thrown away. Ultimately the right of the public to be protected from violence like this outweighs the 'rights' of the offenders and their families.
