this has to be cleared up quickly with so much planned for next year.
gordon makes the point about ddc asking dtc to take over more without any more money.
what's the betting that nothing gets resolved and all the events planned for the summer go the same way as the fountain?

Don't think so Howard.
Tourist centre redevelopment on target, fountain project will go ahead unless people get precious,Olympic & Tattoo events are moving on apace and will be delivered.
There is no need for the politics, reality is the truth.
Sorry I don't recognise "horns being locked".

not totally convinced paul, the town council are hosting the events in market square.
gordon is saying that they overspent last year when there were hardly any events.
fingers crossed on the fountain project, that is paramount - as you say no need for politics to enter into it.

I think we have had threads on this before,
one being collors disaster on the toilets.
You will recall the gun at the head, to the tow council, take these facilities over or the district will close them.
look's like not much changed.

So why is that a DDC/DTC conflict, Howard?
DTC make democratic decisions.

don't see conflict as the right word paul.
the town council can make any decisions they like but they are saying that they need more folding stuff to carry out their duties.

Surely DTC, DDC and their constituents would like 'more folding stuff' but we have all had to tighten our belts. I hope both councils will cut down on the waste.
Are they doing their best is the question

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Jan,
£2.4m this year, £800k next year, £1m year after and on it goes.
Approximately 40-50% reduction.

council cutbacks on DDC
JAN;
The problem from my understanding is that the town council has very little in the way of a budget per year.
the district has gone to the town council saying take over these services or we will close them(toilet fiasco by our very own mr collor being a good example)
but not providing the readies.

The Town Council can set their own precept and they aren't capped, so if they do their sums right, they shouldn't be short of cash.

That's true Keith, but with a cap, there is a limit as to how much the council tax goes up by, so there's a limit as to how many services can be provided/offered.
A few years ago the (Town) Council precept went up by 29%. the following year it was a big fat zero.
The last one I remember, was that they had around £600,000 to play with.

ROGER;
I'm out of politics a lot these days but i would be sure any dosh the town council has would be allocated to particular projects.
the talks with district of take it over or we close it maybe not the best route.

does the town council have unlimited power in setting their precept?

I believe so Howard - decided by the Councillors themselves.
