22:4186618This redwing and his mates have cleaned my holly tree of berries over the last week, fortunately we picked enough for decorations as we expected them once it snowed.
Not a brilliant picture as it was dull and had to be taken through a window as they are very shy, but they are handsome.

20:4186702Here's a nice little chap who hopped into a bush in front of me this afternoon along the path by the police station - a Goldcrest. Aptly named.

08:0286732I'm amazed by the diversity of birds down here; some I thought were quite rare, we'll be invaded by twitters or whatever they're called - could be good for business(es).

14:4187519Does anyone know if the waxwings are still about and where they are? I'd like to try and get a photo, but it's a lot of pointless wandering in the cold to try and find them on the off-chance.

I'll ask at the Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory this evening. Someone there will know if any are still in the area.

09:1787794Waxwings are still around the area, but not in the numbers of a few weeks ago. You will be lucky to find flocks larger than 10 or 20 birds. They have been seen from Hythe through to the Sandwich Golf courses. Keep an eye out on areas with lots of berries, especially industrial estates.

09:2587796Thanks very much Ken. I believe the recent flock at Dover was at Coombe Valley so there must be something special about industrial estates..
I think there a couple of good websites out there which list daily sightings of unusual birds. I'll see if I can find a link later.

09:2887797Most industrial estates are either made up of a lot of waste land which has hawthorne etc, or the modern retail parks which are planted with berry bearing shrubs for decorative reasons.

18:3587821Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory Trust has an interesting website, they are worth a visit too - you pay £1 at the Bay Tollgate to go to the SBBOT carpark. They have a shop, bird books, food, nest boxes, greeting cards (lovely!), and visitors are always welcome.

18:5287830Joined SBBOT last October. £20 gets you a years membership, and that includes access to their car park as well.
