13:0584739Ray, great pictures

but it should be a wood pigeon for a decent meal. I hope the woodpecker keeps visiting they are lovely to look at.

13:2984743Mmmmmm Wood Pigeon, I had it as a starter in a restaurant not to far from here, its meat was shaped like a tower interspersed with biscuit-sized pancakes marinated in Cointreau, Yummy

13:4384747Paul, the top one is a great spotted woodpecker, about starling size. Keep watching the balcony, I first saw one from one of the Stembrook flats.
Jan, the bottom one IS a wood pigeon, about meal for one size

20:5184845So it is Ray, I missed the pink feathers on the breast, which is the only bit worth eating.

21:0684853Jan, I think it might be a young one, nice and tender. I had one in the garden last year that was pure grey with no markings at all, a professional ornithologist identified it and said they sometimes have variations when they're young.

23:0984884The greater spotted woodpecker often visits our garden, and ALWAYS appears to visit the red-hot poker flowers when they are out (for the nectar I guess).
They also like nuts, and fats.
