Southern Rail yet again as their drivers cannot struggle by on £50,000 a year, Argos drivers will be out next week due to backdated holiday pay not being received and Post Office staff next week for some reason or another.

And all cars need a man walking in front of them with a flag!
London Underground Tube trains haven't had guards since 2000.
Having said the above I feel there is a need for train crew (in addition to the driver) on many services and performing different tasks, depending on the train service being provided and the route it is on.
But the issue is too complex to tie down to one simple solution of a guard.

in the position of an emergency is where the problems arise if the driver is unable to protect the train the disaster could become even worse having the second person is always a plus for so many reasons

Having been on a train from London where I was the only one left in the carriage at Ashford when an intimidating bunch of rowdy older schoolchildren boarded I was very grateful when the guard came and sat in there.
Driver only trains are fine , such as the short link cross county shuttle service where my son lives in Oxfordshire as that train only ever has a very few passengers during the day, but even that service has a guard on during the morning and evening rush hour.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

My view is the same but feel sorry for the public,a work to rule would be better that way the public get some trains and the railway workers take home a wage .Work to rule is always better because the boss cannot do anything about them because they make the rules but it makes it much harder to run a service and make cash and trains would end up all over the place with railway network paying out for taxis or bus to get both the public and staff home after each trip costing the alot more than a strike.

but I feel jan has seen it on the front line on how it is and that was just one situation.
but the protection of the train/passengers is important not just profit

What I am not clear on is whether at present an "onboard supervisor" and guard operate on each train or whether they are merging the two jobs to save money.

Chris's guidelines
I'm adding a few guidelines that should be considered before posting on the forum:
1. Take a look at the topic title - is your post related to this discussion? If not, perhaps it's better to start another thread.
2. Does your post contribute something to the discussion?
3. Have you considered the positives as well as the negatives?
4. This is a community - be respectful of other people's opinions. It's okay to disagree but present your case in a tactful way.Guest 649, Paul M and Button like this

Just to add to the fun Virgin Airline pilots vote to strike for two days and 1500 airport staff have now voted to strike.

As an active trade unionist all my life its helpful; to point out these things.
howard it sounds like the role of guard is going and instead having a supervisor non operative in a way a guard would be in an emergency.
strange a lot of trade unions are coming out of the woodwork, but maybe now they aregetting confident after years of attacks on them by different govts

Hogwash
There was no need to mention that unless you intended it to be malicious and spiteful.

Sadly your responses show why there is little trust in councillors.
You make a personal attack on some one and then try to justify the unacceptable.
And yes this is as relevant as you attacking Mr Matcham is to the round of strikes.
The rules of the forum are there for all to follow, councillors included.
