  The Society of Black Lawyers has launched a campaign to have Jews in Britain arrested for calling themselves Yeed (written Yid).
  The London team of Tottenham Hotspur has many Jewish supporters, inevitably many of these speak Yiddish, and in Yiddish, Yeed (spelled Yid) means Jew.
  Spurs fans take delight in calling themselves Yeed (spelled Yid), but now are told by the Political correct Metropolitan Police that they will be arrested if they persist in calling themselves Jews in Yiddish.

  I am British and call myself a Brit.
  Looks like the PC brigade are introducing 1984.
  
  As far as I'm concerned, Jews In Britain have the right to call themselves Jews in Yiddish.
  
  While I don't know who the Society of Black Lawyers are, their name leads me to think they are a political entity: not reds, not blues, not yellows (LibDems), not Greens. but somehow a party of law-makers, even though I don't recall seeing this party on an electoral campaign leaflet.
  
  In fact, I've never voted for this party or their political correctness that appears to transcend Parliamentary authority.
  Does anyone know of this conceptual party?
  
  I am very concerned, as Jews in history have at times been arrested for being Jews, or for identifying themselves as Jews.
  This obscure party is not above the Law, whoever they are it's high time someone told them that we Brits have a tradition of not thinking kindly of ethnic repression.
  We don't arrest people on account of their ethnic origin.

  The chants and shouts of 'yid' and 'yid army' are found to be offensive by jewish fans when the chants are being made by non-jewish fans, and regard the word in that context as similar to the 'n' word when used about black people.
  This is not persecution of the jews, it is in support of them.

  I can see both sides here, and im sure a lot of talking will go on over the weeks to resolve the issues.

  The BNP have nothing to do with it, these chants pre date even the national front. A couple of mates have been going to WHL since the 60s, and the expression has been used since at least then. I watched 'comedian' David Baddiel on TV last year protesting about the use of the word 'yid' by non-jewish supporters and he said he found it to be offensive and racist and was going to campaign to have it stopped. It is nothing to do with persecuting jewish football fans, it is to try and stop the use of a word that some people find offensive.

  i can remember the chant of "yid army" at white hart lane since way back, always used in an ironic way to taunt west ham supporters.

  Surely an organisation calling itself the Society of Black Lawyers must itself be a racist group? Would I get away with setting up the Society of White ex-Bankers? Racism is not confined to the white majority.

  Well I have lived slightly closer to the Gunners than TH for many years, and there are a fair number of Tottenham fans around here too, but I have never heard that term used in a football context, its not a common term around here at all;there are others.
  It is a pity that the particular anti-racist truism:"Its not the name you are called that matters, but the name you answer to." does not help here.
  Nevertheless, like Nigger, Yid is just a word, as indeed is 'Fire', so much depends on context.
  
  I have seen this issue explored once or twice on the TV, and I have taken from these discussions that things should remain as they were;unmolested by disinterested parties.
  Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.

  I have often pondered on this point Peter. I believe there is also an organisation for black women lawyers. Should I take offence if HiD refers to me as "The Mad Paddy" when I am in a strop?

  i dislike all forms of seperatism it breeds a siege mentality.
  
  i can remember back in the banner waving, lapel badge days of politics robin day introducing a left wing woman panellist by describing her as a black disabled lesbian and detailing the grants she was entitled to.
  
  she saw the funny side of it.

  Me thinking it was an illuminati group trying to have a football club outlawed because its supporters are mainly Jews and call themselves Yid (pronounced Yeed) because of their Yiddish connections where Yeed (spelled Yid) means Jew.
  
  I've heard of the Black Friars, who wear black robes.
  Does this obscure society of lawyers get its name from its robes, or from some more obscure aims?

  just a minor point alex, you will find that very few jews nowadays are fluent in yiddish, it started dying out in the 60's.
  
  if you speak to anyone under the age of 40 they mostly know the slang and swear words.

  Listening to the radio the other day where this topic was being discussed feelings were running very high with one Jewish participant who refused to use the word as a result I vowed never to use the Y word again. His feelings were as strong as a black man feels about using the N word which is another word I no longer used.
  
  This is something Alexander and others might like to consider in the future, I am not being politically correct just mindful of others feelings.

  it is only black people the use the "n" word, anyone that knows caribbean people reasonably well will be aware of their strong sense of humour and love of irony.
