Picked up the following bits of gossip this morning:
1. Delmaines are on the brink of reaching agreement on a new lease with the new owners of the centre so may not be moving out after all.
2. TK Maxx are interested in taking the upstairs and have had engineers round doing feasibility studies for escalators.
3. If Delmaines go, Tesco are interested in taking their shop and others on the left side as you enter from High St, to open a Tesco Metro.
4. The owners have possible plans for a 6-day a week covered market on the top floor of the multi-storey car park.
Just rumours, as I said.......

i cannot see tesco opening an express store there with asda being so close, doubt there would be enough trade to keep those two plus morrison's and iceland happy.
i think t k maxx would do well, much the same as george at asda.

They'd better fix the roof first - I rented a unit in the upstairs art centre as a studio/darkroom but gave it up after a couple of months because of the rain coming in and the endless buckets you had to walk around. Rumour then was it would cost about £300,000 to fix it properly.

there was talk of sainsbury's returning at one time but the prohibitive costs of fixing the roof deterred them.

Those were the retailers I was referring to in my thread but I thought it better not to spread the rumours until all was signed and sealed.
TK Maxx have been offered a very nice sweetener to come and already have links with the new owners of the Charlton Centre.
There is also talk of an escalator being put in to give easier access to upstairs.

Let's hope at least some of these rumours turn out to be true! The Charlton Centre should be put to better use given its prominent location and under used car park. I suspect the success of Morrisons has had a big part to play in the rejuvination of this area of town. I would have thought the leaking roof should be a top priority for the new owners, as that is likely to be a deal breaker for any new tenants.

Well the roof has been done some weeks ago and Sainsburys paid for it,as I said I think ASDA has a card to play yet in the car park.

In that case the builders did a lousy job, because there were wet patches this morning that the caretaker was dealing with when I went to work.

This would be good news for the town. There is a dearth of this sort of shop (TK Maxx).

I can't help feel that this is the wrong place! What Dover needs is a 'town centre' development which to my mind means building on Pencester Gardens. People will not trek from Biggin Street to the Charlton Centre or vice versa and should this go ahead it will just serve to divide the town even more.
If Sainsburys and Benetton etc could not make a go of it in the 80s what has changed to make it viable today when we are in the deepest recession since the second world war?

Let me get this right because "people" (you by any chance?) will not "trek" (a 5 minute or so walk at most) from Biggin St to the top end of the High Street (called that for a reason?) you want to rip up a decent bit of green space in the centre of the town.

"Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength,
While loving someone deeply gives you courage" - Laozi
Actually it is one of my guilty pleasures to "trek" from one end to the other of Dovers shopping centre, including London Road. The knee has curtailed that a bit, and I miss it, but I still do a little "trekking"! It has always been my view that London Road has the capacity to be really exciting - it reminds me of a few places I lived in London and with some colour, maybe some fab artwork and murals and some new shops it could rival other bigger centres. The architecture is fascinating and the geography leads the eye down the whole road. It could be great - and current developments are really encouraging.

It makes a change to hear rumours of a positive nature let us hope that at least some of them are true.

Bern
I do exactly the same. I tend to pound the streets looking upwards above shop and business windows. Here are a couple of images I noticed recently
This musical moving clock is above an old Jewellers on King St and goes unnoticed until it starts up on the hour
Natascha took this photo of this above an old pub leading down to Liberation Sq on the seafront.A hidden gem..

Sorry the summer image of the clock didn't come out as it needs resizing. Here is last winters face on the clock.

The town shopping area has always been divided in two because of the large Town Hall building and always will be while it stands but it has never stopped people from using both sides.
When the tatty looking shops get painted the whole area seems to be revitalised and people go there, who wants to visit a run down unkempt looking area.
There is absolutely no need to build on Pencester Gardens and I am surprised anyone would even suggest it.

Turn everything up from the Town Hall back to housing and concentrate the shops in the town direction...
Been nice knowing you :)

How many years have some of us been saying that to. The hight St is far to long if that was done all the shops would be full up.
But on saying that Top end of London Rd does have some very good shops to.
