No comment from the 'usual suspects' - they must be very disappointed with the fall in unemployment.

"Vicky Redwood, UK analyst at Capital Economics, said: "The latest UK labour market figures contain further signs that jobs growth is slowing. Although the Labour Force Survey measure of employment rose by 40,000 in the three months to October, this was the smallest increase since the start of the year.""

a couple of points here.
a) the labour market must be fairly strong as many people on sickness benefit have been moved onto jobseekers allowance.
b) will the labour market be strong enough to swallow up the large number of public sector workers being thrown out of work in the coming year?

Ahhh a 'usual suspect' awakes!!!!
Good news is terrible for him.....
Howard - correct, many have been moved out of sickness to jobseekers and that makes the figures even more impressive.
The bloated public sector was stifling the more important private sector, more important because all the funding for the public sector is derived ultimately from the private sector.
There is still a long way to go, thanks to the economic incompetence during the 1997-2010 period we do still have a massive deficit that must be dealt with and a difficult international situation thanks to foreign governments with a like-minded spend, spend spend attitude to the Blair/Brown regime. But, at least Osborne is taking us in the right direction, though he needs to do more for growth with supply side reforms and cutting back further on that still bloated public sector.

There has been a significant increase in part-time employment, which may explain an apparent overall increase in jobs.
So the latest revelations on employment look more like a smoke and mirrors ploy.
Example: One apple a day does a good job to your overall health.
Divide it into two halves, you have two apples a day doing a good job to your health.
Hmmm? Barry?

It is a mix Alexander. Accept the good news. Employment is up and unemployment is down. This at a time of the deepest and longest recessionary period since the 20's.
I agree, we need more full time employment and we are far from out of trouble, times are hard. But nevertheless we still have a bloated expensive public sector that needs some serious trimming back in order to lighten the burden on the private sector. That will help create more jobs and this can be helped further with significant supply side reforms to de-risk employment.
Only the private sector can pull us out of recession, only the private sector creates wealth, only the private sector can as a result create more worthwhile profitable and sustainable jobs.

What a negative response from some to these upward figures, it is good news NOW even if it may not last, do try to be positive just for a change
A job is a job never mind if it is full or part time, part time often grows to full time if you are good enough and want to change.

Jan, it's all a bit like the sale items in some shops. The label may state that the price has been reduced, but on closer inspection things are not at all as they seem.

Jan.
I would love to be upbeat about employment rising, it would be a move in the right direction for everyone. However, in the same report that Howard lifted this thread from, goes on to say,
"Meanwhile, the number of unemployed rose by 112,000 over the month to 2.57 million, following a 29,000 rise in September. According to this series, the unemployment rate has crept up over the past three months to 8.2 per cent, rather than falling to 7.8 per cent as the main ONS release suggested"
Also I cannot get excited about,
#9 "many have been moved out of sickness to jobseekers and that makes the figures even more impressive"
Moving people from one benefit to another is not impressive.
Moving them into employment would be impressive, though.

Everybody likes a 'sale' Barry. I especially like a 'sale' that is indeed a sale. The ONS are no better than MFI or the Pound Shop that has a sale and says, "Sale on today...everything a pound!"
The ONS headline is for export only, the home market can see around them how things stand.

gary
if people have been moved from incapacity/sickness benefit to jsa that must mean that unemployment should inevitably rise.
the figures suggest that many of those have got a job.
