Hi All
Knowing that many forum members keep their ears to the ground I wonder if anyone has heard anything on the grapevine about the proposal for a new crematorium to be situated in the Pineham/Guston area?
I have it on fairly good authority that the necessary land has already been purchased and meetings have already been held with architects. However, no one in the Guston/ Pineham area has been appraised of this proposal. I have been in touch with a couple of labour Cllrs who also have no knowledge of the proposal.
Think this needs investigation- the A2 cannot cope with anymore traffic!
HELP please!

Hi Arthur, great to hear from you again.
I've heard nothing and agree that is the last thing we need to further destroy the alleged Garden of England, I'll have a search round and see what I can find, although it might be another one of those "hidden" things we all get told when it's decided.
We most young people looking to leave Dover (my two are already planning!) I'm not sure they would need one!

Hi Andy. Many thanks for the information- nothing in the current DDC draft local plan! This proposal is for a crematorium rather than a cemetery but clearly these plans have been considered again - two sites identified in Pineham/Guston.
As usual nothing forthcoming from DDC - “commercially sensitive information “. For that I read, give us time to package it up with a bow on top then we may consider informing the people who will be most effected. No wonder people have lost faith in the democratic process.

There seems to be lots of talk in the online media about a Crematorium being considered in Faversham and that was the tail end of last year? It mentions servicing the Dover area?
Looking through that old plan from 2010, it looks like many sites are unsuitable thanks to our hills and AONB but they do suggest around Guston / Pineham might have been an option back then, although it does mention lack of road infrastructure.
That would be good, lorries queuing to get into the UK / IBF, lorries queuing trying to get out of the UK , TAP activated, ferries delayed by weather, residents trying to go about their lives and then a 40 vehicle strong cortege traying to enter the crem....what could possibly go wrong?

However it’s packaged up, this development would undoubtedly impact the current volumes of traffic on the A2. Even if access was off the A256 (which would involve obtaining more current privately owned land), it cannot be accessed other than via the A2 at some point from Dover town. No public transport links - unless of course it’s another stop on the Fastrack route!!!!!

Mind you, maybe it's a drive-thru at Whitfield roundabout.

Perhaps, with a heat exchanger, it could be used to heat the new Swimming Pool?

I realise it’s always fun to be flippant about issues on this forum which reinforces why I stopped posting.
I was raising an important proposal but clearly a waste of time!

Yes, I was thinking of that; I think they've all passed away now.

Even more flippant and irrelevant. I was tempted to add 'stupid' too.

Ignore the lot of them Arthur, there are some on here that think by making one-line flippant and normally inappropriate jokes / comments, they think there are funny, when it's quite the opposite. They also defend it because they quote something to justify the comment that brings nothing to the serious debate. I don't really care what is happening in Oslo, because it's not the town I live in.
Just watch and stand by for the criticism by some of what I've said......
Oh and please keep looking and posting because if I find out anything about your original, sensible question, I'll post it here.

Have to say I remember)discussion of a Crematorium mentioned in future local planning but the main emphasis was for a new Cemetery. Either way the shortage of either alternative is a major issue for Dover /Deal. Barham is at capacity & Environment Agency stopped extension to theCharlton Cemetery groupings, which would have been natural extensions. Elms Vale/ Hougham area was discarded I remember because of local resistance. If you live in Deal any location in Whitfield area reduces distance & pollution ( depending on location, even to Whitfield residents) . I doubt KCC would be thrilled to have their monopoly broken. So expect objections.

Arthur, after you had posted, I emailed the planning department for DDC and asked if they or anyone else in the council knew anything. Looks like there is something being looked at, probably along the lines of that 2010 document, as I had a reply this afternoon from DDC to confirm they are in very early stages of looking at new crematoria and cemetery capacity in the district. No mention was made of where, when etc as that will come out in any public consultation.
Does that help you?

Thanks Andy. I’m pretty sure I know exactly the location - surveyors in the field tend to be a bit of a give away. I’ve also had it confirmed by a DDC Cllr that the land has been purchased and architects consulted. A further meeting due to be held this week. My concerns lie in the fact that this is all being done in such a secretive manner. There’s no point in holding a “consultation/engagement “ when everything has been decided. Or am I missing something?
