the reds were out in force this morning with clair hawkins at the forefront handing out leaflets for their candidate and generally engaging with the public.
the candidate is harriet yeo who is currently leader of the labour group on ashford borough council and president of the tssa, a union representing british transport police.

The scene happily, if coincidently, juxtaposed opposite another commemoration of a novel means of self-adornment.

She must feel canvassing in Dover very liberating,
When she was a councillor in tower hamlets London she probably needed to stick the
Higab on to get elected

Was Harriet from another wimmin-only shortlist as dictated by Millbank? I would have though her union credentials would throw up a conflict of interest.

Will be very interesting to see how this develops. Just to let you all know I have just had a press release from the rival to the aforementioned, the Conservative candidate, and will get that up tomorrow when i change the frontpage. Always happy to get info coming through on all sorts of topics. So...watch out for that.
Good to see Clair Hawkins getting busy already...she is very personable indeed, met her at the flag raising a short while back. Will give Charlie a run for his money when their turn comes around.
Well done with those pics Howard...on the pace as ever.

PAULB;
Just to show i have no bias, lol I do wish her well, although have to say the
T.S.S.A. was hardly a pro active union(if you could loosly call it a union)
having served for 25 years as an active member of the R.M.T. union at all levels,
the TSSA was known to be a very moderate union, who people joined because they were aware it wouldnever take any real action.
Anyway back to the thread, although I wish the labour candidate well, the way she got her nomination is not one i support and like many i will sadly be spoiling my ballot paper.
Recently i got a letter from the local labour party informing me the contents of letter was noted, but no answering any of my questions, nor did it appear to bother them that i will be givng my views on why i will spoling my ballot paper to the local media in july,
So paulb, im afraid labour has an uphill struggle on this one, sure charlie laughing his socks off.
watch ythe local press as will be writing to them soon,,,,,,,,,,,,

If you have written to them keefy and the contents of your letter were noted then i think thats fair enough..just leave at that , no need to spoil your ballot paper or do anything rash. After all and as they say...we are where we are ..and Clair Hawkins seems to be quite a find.
But back to the candidate for Police Commissioner: Ive got the details of the Conservative Police Commisioner candidate now on the frontpage..now endorsed by the very well known and telegenic Col Tim Collins. See more on f/page plus picture etc.
Have put a link through to this thread also.
If Harriet Yeo wants to send in info then please do by all means.. would be delighted to get her info also.

"His financial knowledge and determination to work closely with Kent Police to smash crime makes him the ideal candidate for Police and Crime Commissioner for Kent."
Does this mean that the smart-money is on Brown-shirt futures?

Paulb;
My E Mail has now gone to both local papers, and as i feel so strongly on this issue, and also about democracy and voting, it has come realy hard to me as to what to do.
I'v had a lot of discussions with people within the labour party, and activists who support the party, and have decided rather than not vote at all, i will spoil my paper.
I will, right up to the general election be raising this issue, i'm sure the local labour party hope it will all be forgotten once the election comes round, but I continue to remind everyone

you clearly feel very strongly about it keith as most of us do.
any form of discrimination is self defeating but time to move on maybe, clair hawkins did not make the rule herself.
will be interesting to hear what she has to say on important local issues, ownership of the port and the proposed development of the western heights are enough to start with.

some interesting points, i would like to have heard a number of candidates views(male and female)on the issues you raise.
sadly that cant/won't happen.
I'm afraid i do feel strongly on this issue and today is the start of my small campaign to make sure everyone is aware of this imposed candidate

Has it occurred to anyone that Clair and Harriet might just have been the best of all candidates of both sexes?

quite right howard.
This ex london living lady may well have been the candidate we will never know as we were not given that opportunity.
My decision has not come lightly, i have given this a lot of thought, talking to a lot of people, even writing to the party 2 years ago(couldnt even be bothered to reply)

rather off considering the years that you have been an activist with them keith.
i think the favourite for the nomination would have been gordon cowan, good that he was clearly mentoring clair at the armed forces day ceremony, introducing her to everybody.

I see your Mr. Cowan leans to the left, or has but one foot on the kerb.

Purely on an information front, gordon has no ambitions to be an MP
That said everyone deals with things differently, gordon has always believed in democracy, even when the 6 rebel labour cllrs went in with the indies and voted against the official agreed labour decision.
Of course gordon argued against the women only shortlist and still opposes it, but believes he can work withn the party.
I'm thankfully not a member, and like howard says after so many years thought at a least a reply could have came as to why they support women only shortlists, i wouldnt agree, but have respected at least the view taken.
This latest move im sure will make me unpopular with the party(not that that bothers me) but i intend making a difference, and will keep up my opposition to this candidate

A new idea from this candidate but can't see how this would be right as the volunteers he wants would have the power of arrest whilst the paid PCSO's don't.

Looks much the same as the current Special Constable's role.
