Double yellow lines are quite prevalent up there Brian; it has been confimed to me that enforcement doesn't only happen on a Sunday morning and to prove that point, I was walking the Clarendon's the other day - during the day and I saw a Parkibg Services van driving round the area.
I do agree with Keith that we cannot force a one-way system on the residents; there isn't the statistics to prove a high accident record around the streets to justify it. It my be wanted by a vocal few, but with a lot of transient people in the area, what is supported at one time, may well be rejected at another.
Traffic speed on one-way streets is shown to be higher and could be more dangerous than it is now.

we keep hearing about 20 mph limits in side streets, brighton is bringing that into force soon.
the problem is one of enforcing it, there are simply not enough traffic policepersons.

Well keith, one thing is for sure- the people of High St, London Rd, Buckland Ave, Barton Rd, Frith Rd, Maison Dieu Rd and Castle St/Church St/Dolphin Lane etc, didn't want the ludicrous one-way system we have all grown to know and love. But they got it anyway. That was a case of 'if it's not broke, keep fixing it until it is broke'.

PETER;
I think we are on the same road(lol) i recently discussed this with a community group, and there wasn't an overwhelming support for any change.
so it would be silly to go down the road of one way systems, double yellow lines, 20 mph speed limits etc
without first finding out what the people want

Quite agree, you wouldn't have boy racers tearing past the Girls' Grammar at 50 mph if it was still two-way.

what the people want is irrelevant if emergency services vehicles cannot get through.
parking should be on one side of the road only in both of the clarendons irrespective of whether a one way system comes in.

there is a little confusion around the clarendons that a one way would solve the parking problems when in fact the 2 issues are completely seperate, to make clarendon one way will in fact get the boy racers as they will know they have the whole street togo from top of longfield rd(down hill) alreasy used by some taxis as a shiort cut/race track)
a one way will not do anything to solve the parking problems the cars will still be parked both sides of the road

agreed keith that is why i would like to see parking on only one side of each road.
the pavements are not wide enough for buggies to get through when cars have theor wheels up on the kerb.

howard
whilst i apprreciate the problem, where dop all the cars go? who decides which side is to be car free?
will local residents support not having cars one side of the road?
i think it wont get support

I gather from people I know who live in that area that while many houses have parking at the rear they only park on the road because a) they can and b) if they don't, some commuter will park outside their house all day. The problem would be better dealt with by a residents' permit system in my view. One permit per household.

people have to take personal responsibility when buying a car, it is not up to the council or any other body to take responsibility for providing parking spaces.
there are stacks of parking spaces at the rear of both roads and garages available to rent.

Residents parking permits cost money and many of those living round there couldn't afford the permit.
I'm not sure there is any real solution to the problems of one-way or car-parking; it has evolved to be what it is now, probably because it is the best of a bad situation.

roger and i probably agree on this one.
As i'v stated on previous posts, none of the emergency services have problem with present situation and say they can get to any emergency.
parking is not a problem for just the clarendon's but throughout the district/country and likely to worsen as more and more cars come onto our roads, said to get realy high up to 2022.
putting double yellow lines down one side would be unfair to whatever side you chose to enforce it on.
so we not much further forward on this one.

Not living in the area I feel I should keep out of this one but one small observation, if a driver can afford to run a car they should be able to afford a parking permit.
