'But amid the sea of confusion, one thing is abundantly clear: large numbers of ordinary Kirkby residents felt sufficiently strongly about the migrant hotel to stage a peaceful protest — one which was joined later by agitators from whatever side, who were interested in violence'.

The extraordinary thing is that the Conservatives could well lose the next election over 'immigration' yet I have heard no reasonable alternative policies from Labour.
Here's the Shadow Home Secretary (centre)

Does that mean that the initial report you posted (from the ever reliable Daily Mail) might have been a tad premature in all its implications?

Initial report in The Times. Covered by most news media. The Mail is usually easiest to link to as not behind firewall.

Back on topic. From the Times:-
Asylum-seeker backlog passes 150,000 mark as upkeep bill hits £2.1bn a year.
Number has increased by 50,000 in just 12 months to hit record.

So all a hoax then?
All that does is gives even less credibility into such reports
Helpful to no one

Providing the seeker can write, we have a plan to help reduce the backlog...

Record Breakers!
The asylum backlog for applicants has hit 160,919, up more than 10,000 in a quarter. It represents 132,182 cases - three times that in 2019 and smashing the previous record under Labour of 125,100.
That's gone up from a city the size of Canterbury to one the size of Oxford in three months!
Yup Button. Read it.
Panic has set in (again) and it's about clearing files rather than dealing with applications.
You wouldn't remember when we had to get the lift engineers in at Lunar House and the problem turned out to be the bottom of the lift shaft being filled with green files which casework had dumped there as they were too difficult to deal with!
More up to date why do you think we have Thanet full of Kosovans on exceptional (sic) leave to remain fleeing a war that finished decades ago?
And to think when I joined IS in 1975 I was told that the I.A.1971 was the end of large scale immigration and net migration was running at about 7,000 a year!
Happy Days.

Loadsa jobs going at £25,000 pa!

Seriously, this works out at £12.02 per hour. What sort of applicant is that going to attract when a 'team leader' in 'spoons can get £12.72?

I really was hoping the above did not come up.
Most will have seen the head-teacher's letter. There was no rape or any form of sexual assault.
The suspended girls have had their 15 minutes of TicTok fame and are talking bollocks.
If you honestly think four rather confused Afghan child refugees are going to go round kicking off in a school in an area which is +95% white you are a fool.
It was very much the other way round. They were the victims.

I agree with the Captain. that is/was the whole problem. Those out to cause trouble versus gossip and lack of actual public facts plus perceived lack of action by some on bullying etc in the past.

Tunisia’s president calls for halt to sub-Saharan immigration
https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2023/feb/23/tunisia-president-kais-saied-calls-for-halt-to-sub-saharan-immigration-amid-crackdown-on-opposition
Let's be honest. If poverty was finished overnight in Sub-Saharan Africa, 50%+ would still use their wealth to get out of the Hell-hole that stretches from the Cape to Cairo to try to get out.
'If only we could open up some safe way for people to apply for asylum' etc
'Traffickers threw children into the sea' to try and lighten their boat and escape coastguard before it capsized, killing up to 100 migrants'.
