the article would have been ok if a word had been put in front of "offensive".
allegedly, possibly, mildly would all have changed the article totally.
local newspapers must not forget that they are there to present facts about local issues.
they are not daily tabloids.

you have never been accused of anything in the local press to my knowledge.
sorry. i still do not share your view on what the press can say.
my view has always been that so long as they do not make accusations of financial irregularities or extra marital matters, then the rest is open.
i have to add though, some of the references to physical attributes of the town's leading figures i do find offensive.
it is ok though, everybody, i will not post endlessly in a sanctimonious way on the subject.
Hurrah for Howard - I will therefore, because it is Lent, give up doing the same.

I'm wiv Keef again on this, y'know what he posted yesterday that the joke itself wasn't pleasant but that Roger apologised so thats it for him. I saw John today and I think we agreed that we hope it blows over soon coz we'd like to get back to crossing swords on the political issues of the day.

I have discussed the Saturday Observer issue with Marijke and cleared the air with her.
She didn't write the "Comment" piece on page 36.
This issue has certainly underlined the need for myself and other public figures to be oh so careful about what we write - almost to the point where the value of what we want to say/write, is minimal.
It also shows the narrow-mindedness and bias of the one person who reported this to so many bodies, for what I am convinced was not a racist reason, but purely to cause me problems - in that perhaps, your support has shown that it has backfired on him.
Can I ask Paul, that this episode be now closed and we return to "normal" - whatever that is.
As I said in an earlier posting, I have been overwhelmed with all your support and I can't tell you how much it has meant to me; if the local Press have been looking in, then I'm sure they realise that too.
But surely, enough is enough ? this joke has been disected, discussed and even demonised, which obviously takes away any humour there was in it.
Looking at this joke with different eyes to the ones I used to post it, it now suggest to me that it has nothing to do with racism or discrimination against anyone, but against the perception of Government policy and if that perception is wrong, then surely the Government should work to change that (wrong) perception.
PaulB, I think the Forum itself would benefit from having an end to this and a return to normal postings and a wider range of threads created for discussion.

ROGER
Welcome back, as I'v indicated on the issue of the joke???? I thoiught it wasn'
t in good taste but that was your choice to post.
I defend peoples right to post biut not to be offensive, and I have to say that joke??????could and probably did offend.
but as i say sadly as iv said before and Rogers just com,ing to realise in the public eye you are judged by the media, and sadly they often pick up the negatives
But as you have stated you apologise if it caused offence and Ia hope you stiock with that cos i do have concerns over your recent postings that actiually you were right and others were wrong.
Im sure that you did not post with the intention of offending,. but we do all come from different walks of life and what may not look to be offensive to you may have a big effect on others.
Im glad though you have started posting again and lookj forward to our disagreements (and agreements)
HOWARD
You are not correct on your posting but I will not continue with this as times have moved on and its best to my mind that we all let the dust settle and move on

Thanks Keith - I think ?
I apologised for any offence it may have caused straight away, I also asked for the joke to be taken down in case it did offend; what makes you think I didn't mean that apology, or that I may change my mind ?

There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

Jacqui
This forum is about having an open debate,
I have made my view clear on Rogers posting
It's not sniping its having a view.
You are for some reason a great fan of the tories/Roger and I respect your right to be so, and its my right if I feel I don';t agree with someone to say so.
You are in a dangerous position of wanting to close down debate which is the very opposite to what the forums about.
So im afraid Jacqui thats life.
Doresn't stop us all getting along

perhaps you will be kind enough to explain what you have been accused of instead of playing games.

good to hear that keith.
maybe in future when you tell me that people are incorrect, you will think first, then desist from making crass and unsubstantiated statements.
