Just received this through, from the Town Council.
Dover Town Council has reluctantly announced that they will be suspending their plans for floral displays throughout the town this year.
As part of its continued effort to make Dover a more welcoming place, the Town Council has been working in partnership with Dover District Council to deliver hanging baskets through the Town Centre as well as railing baskets along York Street.
Unfortunately, due to the water restrictions in place and notification from Veolia that any watering of plants from mains water is strictly prohibited, the Town Council has with great disappointment had to suspend planting for this year.
Dover Town Council does not currently have access to "grey water" (recycled water) which is the only legal form of watering at present, although it is now investigating innovative ways to collect water for next year should restrictions continue.
Cllr Mrs. Susan Jones said "It's a devastating decision for the Council especially after all the effort put in so far, however it is unlikely that the necessary restrictions on watering from the mains will be lifted over the next few months. Dover Town Council has to abide by the restrictions and not plan for costly floral displays which cannot be watered. We are still looking at other ways to brighten the town centre this summer but without thirsty plants."

but Councils DO PLANT SUCCULENT PLANTS which will thrive well in dry conditions - compromises are necessary sometimes -
here is one example

- it CAN BE DONE

Using a hosepipe to water a 'garden' is banned -

Page 3 shows a 'garden' doesn't include plants in an outdoor pot, so there must be another reason for it.

Oh dear have the poor things never heard of water butts also water retention crystals and as Kath said succulents and draught happy plants.
Draught restrictions are just an excuse and a pretty poor one unless they are talking solely about hanging baskets and not the planters.

good points raised from kath and jan, just to add if we cannot use mains water does that stop us from using washing up water on our plants?
You can still use that Howard , but I agree with Jan and Kath there are a variety of plants that could survive given the limited water avaliable , the drought and its effects have been publicised long enough . Other towns seem to be able to manage something . I remember a few months ago being told on here "just wait and see " when the last discussion about the market square and its planters reared it head . Well I have and there is nothing to see except empty containers

You can still water with watering cans. And the Good Lord occasionally helps us out with a few drops. We also have a small river, all of whose flow (once it reaches the town centre) goes into the sea. This is a cop-out of the first magnitude.

tgtally agree peter it must be about time to clear out the deadwood that hold back the town and always find good reasons to do nothing to promote it.

DTC do not have a licence to extract water from the river.
Lets not forget that DDC will still be planting in the town.

By whom Peter?
It is the company that has been given the contract to water the DTC floral displays and hanging baskets that has stated the hosepipe ban prevents them from watering...

In Olympic year, the year Dover sees one of the biggests events it has ever had, and we can't even find a way to make the town look nice. How dissapointing.
