12:4182231More than 100 Libdem parliamentary candidates have today asked Nick Clegg to relent on his tuition fee stand. Quite clearly they see Clegg's unbelievable about face on tuition fees as a burdon too far for them to deal with while out campaigning.
The political wilderness faces not only them, but the Libdems as a whole, on account of this fiasco. And remember, it was a self inflicted fiasco.. a self wounding.
They (the Libdems) are clearly on the run. These activists want all 57 Libdem MPs to vote against tuition fees in order to save the situation. This of course would be another about turn. But then if the weather suits, the Libdems will swivel in whatever direction the wind blows, particularly if its a chill wind. And the wind is very chilly lately.
Their one time pleadge in support of the abandonement of tuition fees was clearly unconditional. However it was quickly forgotten as we know. Not only did the Libdems abandon the abolition plans, but they put the bloody fees up as well...up to £9000 a year and it might have been more.
The big vote on this is in the Commons this week...Im not sure which day. Will be interesting to see how it develops.

12:5182235I will not forget - any potential vote for the LibDems from me is lost - and many of the students and their families let down so badly now will not forgive or forget easily. A real, solid, gold plated frilled and gift wrapped own goal for the LibDems here.

Just to remind us all...here is the man himself in full flow of promises during one of the TV debates. He was going to be all things to all men...he was going to be the "new kind of politics", remember that one!! The new politics alas turned out to be nothing more than hoodwinking those who voted for him and a swivelling lack of steadfastness on anything promised. He brought politics into further disrepute among thousands of first time voters who believed his baloney. Now his own party are getting the political jitters! How long will he last??

13:0682238the yellows are trapped, they would never go against their masters now, that would mean a general election and the likelihood of a wipe out.
in fairness to them when they promised the scrapping of tuition fees they did not expect to be in a position to carry the pledge out.
they are basically a party of protest.

13:2882243I agree with Howard on this, they want their moment of power however slight it may be.
They will do nothing to rock the boat until they get the proportional representation issue sorted, which they hope will be in their favour.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

13:3282245I think they will find it won't matter how the voting system works if no-one is voting for them............

16:2182266Melissa - look back at history. Every time Labour has left office the Conservatives have had a financial mess to clear up and need to take the difficult decisions. There is always a pattern to these things. Most sensible people will know the reasons for what is happening.
The studenst are a side-show and your latter statement is simply not accurate.

16:3182276Brian - you mean like the 'golden legacy' (Blair's words) Ken Clarke handed over to Labour in 1997?
Maybe you could claim that for the 1974 election - but that was Heath's own fault for doing a U-turn and not destroying the Trade Unons. the Party kicked him out because of it.
Before that 1964 - the economy was doing very well indeed at the time.
Then there was 1945 - well that was the aftermath of the war and a coalition government so cant really count.
Before that.... no not really then either.....

17:5982306That is what you now have Brian, unlike the last 13 years of sheer disaster.

18:0082307Barry, you deserve a medal for tenacity. there is no one else on this forum who has the staying power that you have, or is it just plain old brain washed??
Lets face it it does,nt matter what the arguments put forward on the forum ,you behave as if you are the"Grand old Duke of York". You neither look to the left or right, always "ONWARD" according to the "Whigs"of the 18/19 century and god help any one who gets in your way . How very sad seeing a supposed man of the town reduced to hearing his own prejudices above all others.

I feel your postings do little to help debate.
telling people there not sensible just because they disagree with you does little to encourage debate.
getting back to the thread
N clegg has sold his soul in the interest of a few months in govt.
but to do this means he has ripped apart the lib dem party
and all those students/younger generation that believed clegg was bein truthful prior to the election hAve turned against him.
clegg is fully aware he will be destroyed at the next election.
i dont think he will survive as leader and other leadin lib dems likely to lose there seats and general election to.
ALL POSTS ARE MY OWN PERSONAL VIEWS

18:0482309Jimmy - perhaps it is you who should open his eyes from your own prejudices.
Keith, I have not told anybody on here they are not sensible.
