15:1177825Frankly, what Dover really needs is town centre shops, especially a decent mens clothes shop.
But in the spirit of your post, yes an Ikea would be great, so would a PC World and a Comet

16:0877833i cannot see wilkinsons beign interested in whitfiekd, they prefer centre of town sites.
surprised they have not moved here already.
the 3 that ross mentions would be more suited to whitfield.

17:3977855Difficult to know looking at the demographics + the lure of Westwood Cross, McArthur Glen, Canterbury what could possibly turn a profit there.
John Lewis and IKEA are far too up market for Dover at present when even M&S is hanging on by its fingernails.
On the plus side I must say that walking through the town centre last Saturday I was actually quite envious of Dovorians.
At least the transition from life to death won't seem as great as for most of us!

17:5077858Bob I think you have a slightly different brand view of Ikea than some of us.
And the nearest one is Lakeside, and of course it may attract those people who hop, skip and jump across the channel.!

18:0277860lets not talk about McArther Gen.They asked to come to Dover, but was turned down by the Dover council of the Day,I say no more about it.

.
But Wilkingsons could still be looking at Dover,They did at one time as I posted some years ago After talking to one of their Top brass. On a Building site, same way how I found out about Morrinsons two years ahead before they came.

18:1477867Jenni,
With new stores IKEA is aiming at young college educated customers. Urban inhabitants, trend setters and often people who have already used IKEA. Price control is excellent giving value for money and it has taken over the gap in the market that I well remember Habitat had in the late sixties relying on word of mouth for a lot of advertising. Islington yes. Whitstable yes. Dover no.
I fail to see the sort of person who calls their offspring Liam will have furniture named after a character in Wallender!

18:2277874Hmm.. i think we shall have to agree to disagree..
the demographic of the people inside Ikea are varied and different and have items that start at 99p and are an outlet for lots of people.
And the demographic among the population Dover does vary as well.

18:4377880Any retail outlet given permission to open at Whitfield, will only be for bulk items, not the smaller items than can be found in Wilkinsons, Comet or PC World.
We need Town Centre shops - and good qualitry ones too. A stronger ecomomy, thriving shops (not just surviving) and a Town to be proud of, which includes the quality of the buildings too.

18:5177884I saw at the weekend there's a planning application posted on the old MFI site to demolish but I can't find anything online. Anyone know what that's about?

18:5577886My daughter and my in-laws shop up at Ikea now and then. I`ve only ever been to the one in Weymouth some years back, but didn`t find it very exciting. But any new store`s either at Dover, (preferably), or Whitfield should be welcomed. Yes, a Comet or similar store urgently needed.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

19:3077899I've got a notion that the Council has outwitted itself on the topic of new shops. One plan is to build up DTIZ as a commercial shopping centre. Then we have the Saturday market stall. Then there are the empty shops in the Town-centre and Snargate Street. Add to that the shop-plans for Whitfield, and all we need is to go on a shopping spree.

20:5277925It is not the DDC that is proposing the shops at Whitfield/White Cliffs Business Park; it is a developer who has put a proposal in to develop a site for 6 large "bulk item" stores

20:5777928Ray - it is probably just a re-statement of the original planning application for DTIZ as it was up for demolition for the building of flats
Been nice knowing you :)

11:1178249I contacted Wilkinsons last year when there was a rumour they were coming to Dover and the answer was no. I have emailed them again saying we did not have a hardware shop in Dover and have recieved the following reply this morning.
"I am sorry but there are still no plans to open a store in Dover. . . . . . .Your request has been logged onto our system so the situation may change in the future."
A great shame as I even told them about a potential site, the old Sainsbury store. At least they know there is a need for their kind of store and I can but hope.
