There have been clamourings for a bowling alley in Dover since The Crypt was still open. Nothing ever changes.

the big leisure companies would have done their homework and found the idea unviable.
we hear calls for "waitrose" to open a branch here every now and again, that is another case where it is unlikely to happen, the demographics do not fit the idea.

They might not have done Howard, it could also depend on them being invited to come to Dover.

they would have studied statistics jan, size of population, age of same. how much disposable income they have and a few other things.
they would only visit if everything fitted in and they wanted to look at possible sites.

I think I've said this before on here, a big problem is that 75% of Dover's catchment area is under water.

that is the biggest problem ray, look at ashford nearly a city now and a massive catchment area all around them.

Ray - how do you figure 75% - Dover is not some sort of headland - at most it is 50%
It boils down to the use it or lose it argument again - people need to bite the bullet and use local retail as much as possible and this will start to encourage new retailers etc.

Looking at Eldred's plan of Dover Harbour dated 1641, there was an enclosed area described as "The Bowling Place" roughly where Camden Crescent is today.

I think the actual figure is between 50% and 75% if you look at a map, about 65% sea is my guess.
Jan - I do know that leisure companies were approached in respect of the original brief for the DTIZ that included leisure provision. The Asda based scheme only appeared after drawing a blank with them. Unfortunately it just will not work here financially.

Our cliffs are better known around the world than their cathedral.

I've long believed that Dover Castle and White Cliffs is more deserving of UNESCO world heritage site status than Canterbury, even being a Canterbury native myself.
