11:0488388Interesting and a far more appropriate memorial for Dover seafront.

11:0688389Well the miner waited long enough, and it became evident that mines in Kent won't be re-opening, thank God!

12:3388397OK, I can see where this thread is heading already....
Any idea as to the design of the memorial? There is an Operation Fuller memorial at Ramsgate that was unveiled last year and consists of a large block with informative panels either side. A little internet snooping tells me the Dover Memorial is being organised by The Channel Dash Association, the plan being to unveil it for the 70th Anniversary of this action in which 18 airmen lost their lives.
Scroll down to near the bottom of this page for the Ramsgate Memorial:

The memorial is planned to be a black granite obeliske and would be perfect for the site

13:0388407Excellent Paul. A fitting memorial commemorating a heroic action - much more appropriate to Dover than the miner.

15:4388419I am not against the plan but it would be nice if something more pertinent to Dover itself was there instead.

16:1488430The Channel dash is highly pertinent to Dover Jan, it went right past our doorstep and shore units (and others), engaged in the operation, were based here. I suspect that there may still be locals living in Dover who will remember it, in fact I think my dad told me something about it, I must ask him when I see him next. He was a boy in Dover during the war and was not evacuated.

16:1988433that one in ramsgate looks ideal to me, we definitely need something to replace the miner.

16:3288438I was thinking of Dover itself not the Channel area, as I said I am not against the plan but there is already a memorial in Ramsgate.

16:4188442Ramsgate was also the base for units involved in the operation so it is equally relevant to them, Jan. Dover being the narrowest point in the Channel, therefore the closest point to the German ships in the dash, with them within 'eyeball' and artillery range makes it just as pertinent and the Zeebrugge raid in WW1 and other WW2 actions in the Channel.

17:4288459I have been trying to think of something else that would be appropriate for the site and have decided on a memerial to those that died on the Herald of Free Enterprise, I know there is a already a memorial window in St Marys.

18:5988478rather interesting that we have a memorial for the people that attempted to enter our country illegally but not for the innocent victims of the herald.
