As briefed upon in the 'other' thread the Western Heights Preservation Society (yes I am speaking this time as a committee member!) will be holding a public meeting on the evening of Wednesday 8th August 7:30 in central Dover - details will be available shortly as I am just fine tuning the plans, but I wanted to let people know so that they can reserve the date. With the recent memorial/CGI plans and the DDC Heritage Strategy the work of the Society has rocketed up to another so we wanted to keep people up to date with our work
The agenda will be along the lines of a presentation from the committee:
- Brief history of the Heights with the recent historical research
- Past and present work of the WHPS
- Future plans, projects and aspirations
- Implications of the CGI and War Memorial proposals
- Open Q&A/discussion
As I say I will post the full details in the next day or so once I have confirmed with the committee and the venue.
Been nice knowing you :)

thanks for keeping the forum informed paul but i have to say it would be more pertinent when the second set of proposals are presented to ddc.
the way i see it the present plans will not even get close to being passed in their present form.
it's all a bit of a middle eastern haggle, cgi have to do the best by their shareholders by giving as little money away as they can.
some very influential people are posting on this thread and cgi will be following it closely without showing their hand which suggests that sweeteners wil be offered in their second set of plans.

CGI have invested a lot of money so are in it for the long haul - WHPS are determined to build on past successul but also capitalise on recent publicity and comments from English Heritage.
We want to keep people posted with what we do, but also to appeal to population to assist with projects as without volunteers we can go nowhere....

It may be more appropriate to wait till the outcome of DDC Planning's decision on the CGI proposals, Paul.
With Protect Kent and English Heritage showing their opposition to the planning application, and the 2 hour petition in Cannon/Biggin Streets with a snap-shot of local and international opinion, perhaps CGI may make new proposals, or receive an offer for their land such as the one which the NT is making for a section of Eastern Heights.

Cross-linking to Brian's thread, why not get in touch with Microsoft? Paul Allen is raising the Hood's bell so obviously has an interest in British military history......

A rather sad opinion there Alexander - with or without CGI there is still a lot that needs to be done and can be done.
Get accusations of being cliquey and secretive, arrange a public meeting and people don't want to come !!!!!!!!!!!

I think anyone w/ a vested interest, any interest or who has posted on a WH thread would find it a real benefit to go along to this meeting.

Yet more criticism of the date of the meeting? I thought the meeting would be what the public wanted. Anyone would think we get paid for this.

Well done to all those concerned with preserving Western Heights historic sites I hope you have a successful meeting, it will certainly be interesting to see how many turn up. Sadly I doubt if I will be there but I will be in spirit.

Thanks Jan
Can't understand why Alexander doesn't want to come along and feed into the discussion?

I'd expect DDC Planning to reject the CGI application and declare Western Heights and Farthingloe as being excluded from urban development.
Then it would be appropriate to organise a meeting to discuss ways forward.
Because of the ongoing dispute with English Heritage, of whom I am a member, I cannot take sides against English Heritage, whose views I share.

Alexander - CGI plans are going to run and run and run and run and run and run....... the current plans will be rejected, and CGI will come back with more, and on they will go. A company has invested millions to get this far and aren't just going to drop.
The Heights will continue to fall down and actions need to continue to be taken, and interested parties still need to talk to each other. Hence a meeting to communicate between people.
I am struggling to see where you think there are 'sides' ??????
Sad you won't attend, but I am sure there will be a lot of people who truely care about the Heights will attend, including residents of the Heights who were dropped leaflets today.
Been nice knowing you :)
