Back in the sixties when my husband and I bought our first flat in Slough we found out after purchase many people had lived there.Changing bed spaces as it were. The place was in a terrible state when we moved in .The area was rather like Folkestone Road.

Desolation Spot. You look around, and see Desolation Area.
A good thing the Borbonic Plague has been extinguished in England!

How long before it returns, the way things are heading in this area I would say not many more years time, the Folkestone Road and the Clarendons are fast becoming the slums of Dover, and the planning dept still do not listen to what is said, they still let the larger houses be converted into flats, one was passed the other day in Clarendon Place, objections put forward re: the parking problems in that area, according to plans there is ample room for parking, and so the plans were passed

I agree that many of the problems we face in Folkestone Road and the surrounding areas now, were borne out of the conversions from large family homes into tiny units.
Vic. Keith and myself argued at every planning committee meeting when these applications came up. Didn't make a blind bit of difference though.
There seems to be an increasing number of people in Folkestone Road who seem intent on bringing the area down to the level they lived in, when in their home country.
As Howard's photos show, there are over-filled and over-flowing bins with rubbish all over the floor, from the house to the pavement.
When I sent a letter to waste services yesterday, I said about the houses round numbers 191/193 (I couldn't remember the exact numbers - it turns out it is 181 and 183), I had a reply saying that a visit was made and 193 is clear, so that O.K. then; no mention of the houses just a few paces away with all this rubbish (181 & 183).
Collection day has come and gone, but the rubbish is still there.
Everyone with decent standards is outraged that they can make so much mess and no action taken against them.
There may be procedures to go through, but they obviously are NOT working.

Seems clear that the Local Government have messed up a part of Dover by allowing and approving mass conversions of houses into small units, where you have the impression 20 families are living in two houses.

I quickly edited something there, but yes, perhaps P W is following with interest!
Does this problem also exist in Deal, Paul W?

I don't think this problem would even be allowed to start, in either Sandwich or Deal, Alexander.

Deal or Sandwich don't have the volume of huge houses that aren't viable as a single dwelling - look at Folkestone for similar problems...
Been nice knowing you :)

It has absolutely nothing to do with political parties Vic. it is the recommendation of the Planning Officers and the decision of the Planning Committee (made up of both parties - and I voted against them.

The problem needs sorting whoever is in power, before we get deseases from the smell of some of the rubbish, that come from some of these large houses.
We have a nice young lady moved into the area, in Clarendon Street, but at the moment her utility room is full of maggots, goodness knows where they are coming from, have reported the situation to the authorities, she has a young baby so does not want that sort of thing in the property, the house next to her has had to be fumegated a few times before it could be relet

Whatever DDC Planning did in this respect, it was following core-strategy planning laid down by DDC Government.
People must be careful who they vote next time round: if in doubt, think of Western Dover, the heaps of garbage piling up in the streets, the houses with 10 families living in 8 rooms, the bed-share arrangements for people working on shifts at Tilmanstone Salads, and the masses of local unemployed!
Is this the Dover we want for our future generations?
As Roger says, Deal wouldn't be allowed to fall into this situation.
We need a new DDC Government, one which is there for the People, which you can approach, one which is prepared to revise defunct 15-25 year People's Republic-style plans which pre-date the 2008 financial collapse.
What we see in Western Dover is part of rotten DDC core strategies which were based on false assumptions, such as "Pfizer will expand" (they all but closed down), and "thousands of jobs are coming to Dover".
The thousands of jobs coming through Tilmanstone Salads usually last 4 weeks each!
If in doubt, visit Western Dover and the job centre to see what situation this Local Government has got us in to.

wow qute a statement there from a number of people.
a few commrents to help the debate along;
1;' roger its fair to say you voted against the majority of the applications
2; can't hide away from the fact that this has gone on to long under other
administrations and the present conservative one, but as sheila says it doesn't
matter who solves it but someone needs to
3; whilst the majority of the problems are our ethnic friends im sure we can see
other houses which have white british in them making a mess
4; indeed roger it wouldn't happen in conservative heartland sandwich and deal
and that realy does tell its own story.
Having been involved in trying to warn the council all those years ago on where
this would all head it fell on deaf ears, we are now reeping the problems warned all those years ago.
