The Emirates Air Line - the London cable car - opened today. Looks fantastic, but I don't think it could rival the views that a Dover cable car could offer. Just imagine soaring over the harbour up to the castle, taking in the magnificent views of Dover, the White Cliffs and on a good day, all the way to France.

There's no doubt the London version has cost a lot of money (£60m!) but I think it's a much longer route than was envisaged for Dover, and they got a good sponsor in Emirates. Yes, there's a cost to ride but £6.40 for a round trip sounds pretty reasonable to me. I know it would be more challenging for Dover, but I believe the concept has an awful lot of merit to transform the image of Dover as a destination.

# 1 and # 3...agree..every cable car in the world charges because the restaurants and shops at the terminals are doing
great business...
Dover must have a cable car.....perhaps the Port of Dover will sponsor ours ?

But don't people think Dover is a bit too small for one?? You can walk from the town to castle in nearly no time, when I took the Madeira one it toos us about 2 hours to get back down !!!
Trams/Buses would make more sense to be flexible and assist ALL of Dover's struggling attractions ?
Been nice knowing you :)

Is it the Palaces, the Museums, the Churches, the Theatres...the shops?
No! Its...a cable stretched across the Thames...

Be closed if it goes to the Castle - they can't keep that open if there is the slightest hint of wind or snow or ice !!!

Any cable car will not be run or financed by DDC. It must be privately funded.

keith
if you are referring to the leas lift then it is certainly not disused, in fact it is thriving under the leadership of a keen group of volunteers.

Sorry Howard
It was shut last time I see it.
But I still think Dover would be better of with a tourist attraction something like Alton towers or Disney land UK.

Yes, some kind of tourist attraction.
What about a castle or something historic?
That would get them in.

#1 Kevin, I felt elated when I read your description of soaring over the harbour up to the castle taking in the magnificent views of our white cliffs and France on a good day but got quickly deflated as I read on down the posts.......... ah! well, it was nice while it lasted

Lovely idea
Impractical due to
Passing over the Gateway flats (solvable - maybe)
Terminal at the Castle is likely to adversely affect the land etc - might be solvable - but will take years to get all the necessary consents and deal with all the objections
the problems of coastal weather, which cannot be addressed

I think the idea is great and it would be a fantastic tourist attraction. Reading some of the comments above though, perhaps it just wouldn't be practical.

Its a project that would change everything about Dover, a cable car leading from the sea front to the Castle would be an amazing attraction.
Lets hope it happens

i can't see anyone willing to finance it in the current economic climate.
most investors are looking for comfortable safe returns with little chance of anything going wrong, the port is a good example of a safe bet.
