16:5086215i am wondering at which point does a public servant get into hot water for making a political statement.
they have views like everyone else, where would the the cut off point be.
they can certainly stand for public office.

16:5186216And a Merry Xmas to you and yours Keith.
I was at Garwick at 0715 picking up my family who are with us at Xmas.
I'll down a glass or two with you with pleasant thoughts and wishing you best for 2011, despite our postings.

16:5986218Perhaps Howard it is better not ask the question.
As people acknowledge this is a global forum.
Both you and I know it is not what happens openly that decides matters.

i recall 25 years ago cllrs from all political parties used to go a pint after ful council
when at town hall used to go to the park inn
then at whitfield to the ramada
after a couple of years it stopped.
one thing i always found funny geoff haworth(remember him paulw ???)
he wouldnt come into the chamber till he had listened to the archers so he always missed the first 15 minutes of the committee we were on
funny a real left wing geezer like geoff liking the archers
saw him at crabble recently all these years later and hes totally grey(hair)
i must be getting old
lol
i even once brought barryw a pint in the white horse!!!!!
you enjoy your time with your family
sure we will continue to disagree in 2011
have a lovely family xmas
and will keep you to that pint or 2 lol

17:2786230Back to the topic....
We (the Western Heights Preservation Society) have had very good coverage from both papers this year, and to given them stick at this time of year is a bit off. Not much is happening, a lot had been cancelled, people are on leave and it is always a bit 'thin' at this time of year.
We need to support our local papers as we will quickly complain they are gone !!
Been nice knowing you :)

18:2886236Local Papers and Good Faith? Don't make me laugh. If they bothered to check facts first, maybe withdrew or apologised for inaccuracies, or cared enough to acknowledge the impact of their stories on peoples lives for no good reason and no real "public interest" to justify it. That isn't going to happen. And no, the local papers are tissue thin on Dover and however you try to claim there are local stories the fact is the papers are dull, irrelevant and biased. Just my own opinion, of course, and I am happy to admit that.

18:2986237Well said, Scotchie. Agree with you entirely. They are two very good local papers which we are lucky to have and I always make sure that I buy them both.
Seasons greetings to all the staff at the Dover Express and Dover Mercury. Keep up the good work!

19:3386244we seem to be split down the middle here, half want to see rhys, kathy and yam elevated to sainthood the other half wanting them crucified, we need a casting vote here.
best not to ask blue barry he would have them executed anyway.

19:4186246Good grief you politicals are like little children at times squabbling in the playground and you wonder why so many view politicians with contempt and don't bother to vote.
30 posts as I type this and 16 of them from #10 are you lot bickering. I nearly gave up on this thread and would have done if I had not seen the common sensed Bern

was the last poster.
I do not need to be told about everyone can post their views etc I have heard it all before. Some of you just get bogged down trying to score the last point. BORING.
OK, rant over that feels better.

20:0986253Tragedy is Jan, that you read it.
Having read it ,if it is incorrect and not appropriate and not countered you might believe it.
I have no doubt you can/will make your own judgement but once a statement is posted and not responded to its a develops a reality that is hard to counter.
If you don't have the background of the poster or the history these little one liners move from one liners into headlines, which is the intention.
Sorry to have bored you further.

21:1486267i think you are being a bit unfair jan.
there are no other local forums as far as i know that can boast our betters posting on them.
keith, though not a politico now, has spent a quarter of a century representing people at district and county level.
paul the fuhrer has done similarly and has led dover district for the past 8 years.
when i speak to people from outside they are astonished that someone in such a position puts their head on the line in communicating with the public in this way.
the same applies to other councillors that post here, it can only be a lose/lose situation for them.

21:4286270This forum is well managed and fair, encouraging a wide cross section to participate. Fortunately we can choose which threads to follow!!!!

21:5886271Howard, you do not have to be 'in office' to be a politico and I was not talking about some of the informative and interesting discussions that we get here. I explained what was irritating and said I had heard the so called reasons before.
The trouble is I am unable to avoid some of the childish bickering that goes on spoiling what can otherwise be an interesting subject. I can't help but wonder how long will it be before someone hijacks the Merry Christmas thread.

22:0786273bern is right, paul makes it an article of faith to encourage all sides to participate.
this is not just in party politics either, the peoples port issue is a case in point, something that affect us all.
we have had statements from "peoples port chas" and " bobby g" from the harbour board on the front page.
everything they send in is published unedited, there is no bias towards or against anybody.
