12:3974493withour pre-empting any future enquiry, my first thought was it might have been a more successful outcome if our own special forces were used.

13:1574495I would agree too. Our Special Forces are without a doubt the best and while the American are very good too they do have a bit of a trigger happy reputation.
I have no doubt that it was right to attempt a rescue though.

13:3474498I quite agree Barry with both statements, an 'expert' yesterday said it was only a matter of time before her captors would kill her.
A very sad outcome, I feel sorry for her family.

14:5774515there is no doubt that they had to go in, the americans did so as it was their territory.
back in operation desert storm general schwarzkopf requested the s.a.s. to carry out operations that his own special forces were not as qualified in.
maybe they should have done that again, as barry says they are a bit trigger happy sometimes.

17:0674531i have read reports that her captors made her wear a bomb vest which they blew as the yanks where going in,the report allso went on to say that the local afgan leaders where close to getting her released.

20:4474578old news brian, though it may be true about the local afghans getting close to gaining her release, they had mananged to negotiate the release of the locals nabbed at the same time.
i was surprised that the americans had come clean on the incident, would we have ever known otherwise?

22:2474593all very sad brian, having said that i was impressed by our prime minister today.
he can be a prat sometimes but today he surpassed himself, a news conference was called for 11 am about the incident, this was continually delayed.
later it transpired that he wanted to speak to the victims family first before he spoke about the news update.
he came across as genuinely upset about the whole affair,i believe it was genuine.

22:5574598Would you rather he had held the press conference without talking to the family,

. Maybe they could not be contacted, people do go out if they are not expecting phone calls or visits.
I agree with your last sentence Howard, he did seem upset.

23:2474600They had to try to rescue her even if only for the sake of other aid workers at risk in the area, maybe the Brit special forces could have done it better, but were any available after all it was in territory that the Americans know better. A sad loss of life of a brave woman.

As for this prat rubbish, pity you had to spoil a post with that Howard. I really am not sure how you can say that after a few years of Brown who was truly a prat turning everything he touched into a disaster.

you clearly did not see the interview on the beeb yesterday when our prime minister wriggled and squirmed when asked about his edlection promises.
almost at a level of the famous paxman/howard interview.

09:3674628Your interpretation Howard. Do not forget we have a coalition government now, not a Conservative government so manifestos go out of the window in negotiations between parties. Dreadful I agree but that is what the electorate landed us with.

14:5574653not my interpretation barry, i saw it 3 times.
all dave has to say is that he and his government are breaking election pledges, then say why.
the same applies to nick and vince, doing themselves no favours.
people are now accepting that drastic cuts are going to happen they just want to know where and when.

17:1274671The responsability for this womans death lies squarely on her own shoulders. No one stuck a gun into her back and ordered her to go to Afghanistan. She was a rather misguided volenteer and knew the risks she was taking. the only good news to come out of this whole sorry story is that none of her intended rescuers were killed.
Lets hope lessons are finally learnt, namely get our people out of there and let the Afghans kill themselves as they wish.

17:3674675a bit harsh of you james, there are people that put the sufferings of others before their own safety.
the local afghans done all in their power to free her and others that have been kidnapped before, so they appreciate all that then infidels do to help them.
i think that if you asked the special forces people whether they thought it important to rescue people like that it would be met by a resounding yes.
