Latest revelation is that Labour Councillors are required to be members of Trade Unions.
Eric Pickles says he was unaware of this and is likely to amend councillor interest declarations to ensure this is now included.

different issue reg, as far as i am aware union or lodge membership should be declared in the register of interests.
what paul is saying is that red councillors have to be a member of a union, a step too far.
i have not seen any corroborating evidence of this so far, not even on the daily mail website.

Iv read the right wing report and can see no reference to labour party rules and forcing trade union membership nor could they
but if you would be a member of the same party that is at present an embarrassment I fully understand watty putting out these red herrings so that the cobbled together fiasco isn't discussed
nice try though,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Keith, of course you are fully entitled to spoil your paper and encourage others to do so, it reeks of attention seeking though - why waste the time, just don't vote.
Either way its great news for Mr Elphicke, he'll be hoping hundreds follow you, be careful what you wish for.

Political subs
Its not so clean cut has you suggest, Howard, and Keith s
Political subs are on an opt out arrangement,
So if you present your self at the union office saying you wish to opt out of the political levy, you're not going to be in the good books, of them that one day you may depend on to help you out?
Much better if your going to have a political levy it be an opt in,
And you get the chance to nominate the party you whish your subs to go to.

I offered no advice at all, I'm simply saying if enough people follow your advice the tories will win.
Not for the first time you haven't thought it through

There are many members that OPT OUT and are treated no different to any other union member
nor could they be
David
As I said I don't need your advice, and yes I fully understand the implications of my actions, and don't do these things lightly
but as your not a political person or tory shouldn't matter to you.

I have been a member of TSSA for nearly 40 years and a Labour Party member for 35 years, what is the problem.Did the union get me to join the Labour Party no,my neighbour did the then and respected Labour Cllr at Town District and County level Pauline Leith.
By the way the TSSA union are talking to Unison about joining them, and as a point of interest in my 40 years on the railway I have never been asked or had to go on strike.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

Keith B, I agree one should have to opt in but surely you are not saying that a union would not represent you properly because you have opted out of the levy.
Many years ago my husband opted out of the political levy when he was a member of the Seamans Union and was treated no differently to the other members.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.
