My point exactly Roger.
I think the Independent has been quite balanced on this topic and read a lot of for and against. This one made laugh yesterday:
http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/house-and-home/property/home-truths-squatting-is-the-perfect-example-of-the-big-society-2288870.html
As for the other newspapers, I'm sure we get a balance. One Big Society Project could be for the Barclay brothers to publish in the Telegraph how the common man could pay as little tax as possible. As they manage to do.

Interesting that David Miliband urged the Labour Party yesterday to embrace the ideals of the Big Society.

I'm not convinced that the originators of the Big Society concept ever considered that it would lead to the "People" taking control of one of our most important pieces of national infrastructure, i.e. the Port of Dover. Interesting how such vague concepts can be "spun" to meet political leanings, left or right!

Surely that's better than selling control to Dubai Ports or a foreign sovereign wealth fund?

Not necessarily! If that's what unlocks the investment and potential for Dover. One presumes P&O wouldn't be too upset if Dubai Ports brought the port. SeaFrance and DFDS may have something to say though!

If Dubai bought Dover they would have to sell P&O. No question about that.

Agreed, Peter. Given your background in investment banking, I'm just curious as to why you don't think foreign investment in Dover is a good idea?

PETER;
I'm sure the concept of the big society is a good one.
The problem at the moment is getting it to work
you don't have to make political point scoring over who goes with it or not,
doesn't matter
what matters is, how do we get it to work to the benefit of the majority

Not trying to score points Keith (it's not necessary), just pleased that we are coming towards a consensus that the Big Society model is a good one. It can move forward much faster if it's not caught up in childish inter-party bickering.

i a recent poll more blue voters were sceptical about the big society than red ones.
not really a party thing, as mentioned previously simply red ed seems to be broadly in favour.

Personally I resent Cameron or any other politician, trying to tell me what to do. They pontificate from some moral high ground that doesn't exist. They occupy a corrupt parliament full of thieves, cheats, liars and power mad individuals
Let them clean up their own act first before telling the hardworking man on the street what he should be doing, isn't he doing enough by paying taxes that pay their salaries.

MAREK;
I don't disagree with much of what you say.
there needs to be a lot of changes before the concept of the big society is to work.
funny isn't it if it were a labour idea and i mentioned cameron going along with it
many posters woiuld be on here saying i was making it political.
funny when your a conservative you see things so much differently lol

I am all for foreign investment in Dover but I have (and always had) misgivings about strategic foreign controlling interests in our national infrastructure. In fact when the DTIZ project looked like going tits-up when ASDA started going wobbly I was constantly going on at the council to start talking to the French hypermarket chains. Now that's something that would actually bring people to Dover. But it's not the same as selling them the gateway to the nation.

The concept of the Big Society will start to work when people stop expecting the Government and councils to do things for them. Some people will then club together to set up mutual ventures to do those things. There is no reason why such mutuals should rely on volunteers to do the work nor any reason they should not be run on a fully commercial basis.

Peter, I broadly agree with you, however whilst the banks have so woefully missed their lending targets and other sources of seed capital being rarer than hens teeth at the moment (particularly the sort of micro capital many social enterprises are seeking) how do these things get off the ground?
