we never kept eggs in the fridge when i was a kid, mind you we didn't have a fridge.
if you do keep eggs in the fridge make sure you take them out at least an hour before boiling them!!

Yes, I agree Peter. Having kept chickens it makes you realise that the eggs are laid over 10 days or so before the hen sits on them, and are still viable for quite a time. I do miss the new laid eggs.

in the light of the arrival of food banks and stories of how families are struggling with food bills there are some useful ideas here.
rather like the idea of supermarkets "bargains" being exposed for what they are and the tip about when best to buy vegetables.

A good German traditional favourite: Eisbein mit Puree. Pork knuckles are very cheap and delicious. I'm sure Heike can give us a recipe

Fresh herrings 4 for £1 on Deal seafront at present - grilled, fried, soused etc and if you're lucky you get some soft roes to make a nice snack.

Pork knuckles (hock) are excellent, I used to make brawn with them. You can buy cooked ones at the Sandwich co-op, inexpensive and very tasty, quite a lot of meat on one.

these are savoy cabbage rolls and very easy to make. Nice winter warmer meal to enjoy in the very cold Days ahead.
savoy cabbage to simmer for 15 to 20 minutes in salty water.
in that time you can prepare the mince. I usually do half and half (pork&beef)
onions,garlic, red pepper (optional), one dry white roll, 2eggs, pepper&salt all mixed up in a bowl.
Then take the whole leave apart from the savoy cabbage & place the mixed mince in the middle and roll it up. U can use white sawing string or there are special meat needles you can use too. Either work fine.
Shallow fry until golden to brown color and add some off the savoy water to simmer. Which will become your gravy
while this is on the hob you can do your potatoes. Done

When we lived in Canterbury our neighbour was German. Born in Danzig (now Gdansk in Poland) before the war, she later moved with her family to Hamburg in 1940. She often used to cook that very dish. Very tasty it was, too.

it still is. I have been told many times as a child, as meat was rare thats what they used to eat just little meat and lots of cabbage around it. I still love this dish
that taste have never gone.
Anyone one tried creamed spinach boiled potatoes with scrambled egg on top?? I will do that nxt time

I like particularly the east European habit of smoking pork very highly so a little goes a long way flavour-wise, especially in a dish like a sausage casserole. The Baltic Branch shop in Dover Market Square has a great selection of smoked meat and fish.

I do get the bread from them as it is very similar to german bread and sometimes I just dont have time to bake my own.
I used to bake my own ... yes ... havent done for a while. Maybe worth getting my recipe s out again.

yes I know Carole... But I am certainly not a fan of ^^ ...lol
I like more the traditional food or what we used to call after war meals.
They are simple, tasty and cheap :) But have tried some other various things.
Have you ever tried snails? (with garlic and butter)
