Not the most ideal of candidates but an Independent has beaten the two main party`s ....Lib/Dem loses their deposit.
It is very encouraging that an Independent free of the two party machines controlling MP`s to vote as instructed.
We need more Independent MP`s in Parliament.

George Galloway is a great character but I would not want to see too many of him in parliament. But you are right, Reg - the party whipping system is undemocratic to say the least. Governments should legislate by agreement not by coercion.

REG;
On this one we again agree.
the 2 main parties failed to reach thre electorate in this bye election.
for labour's keith vaz to say this was a small blip is wrong, galloway is a very popular figure that takes with him the electorate but we saw with the ex reporter who has in the past took a seat from the tories that this not something the 2 main parties should take lightly(of course the 3rd party, lib dems, have there own problems so probably need to sort them)
the two main parties for some time have lost the faith of the electorate and the days of 'safe seats' are thankfully over.
the people of bradford west have not just sent a clear message to the labour party not to take them for granted, but also to the tories
the electorate are not here as voting fodder
although galloway would not be my ideal choice, the message is clear
engage, or even more seats will go

Surely Galloway should be representing Catford?

Minor correction, he's not an Independent, just his party's only MP -
http://www.respectparty.org/
I'm sure if his party manged to gain other MPs they would be whipped ( and from his antics on Celeb Big brother he'd probably enjoy being the one doing it!)
ps did Reg actually write #1, it's not in his style, or has someone told him ... are being rationed!

The electorate seem to have stuck their fingers up to the three established parties, which is refreshing. Will it bring about a rethink of strategy and policy or will self-interest prevail?

Gawd I cant beleive it...George Galloway has resurrected himself from the political dead. This guy is fairly awful in my book...I cant get away from that image of him on Big Brother behaving as a cat and licking milk from Rula Lenska's lap..while uttering meiow meiow...and she patting him on the head. Not a good political image...fine if you are pursuing a career as a tv game show regular..but he was an MP at the time.
George is seen as a friend of the arab, big anti war message won through here, it certainly played well with the local ethnic community and particularly so amongst the youth. However apart from the protest vote, do the constituents really get a good all round repesentation from an ego-ecentric guy who comes across as totally bananas.
However having said all that...it was one hell of a win.

ray;
you are correct galloway is a member of the respect political party not an indy.
and in time in the unlikely event of respect of gaining any more seats he would go the same way as other major parties and whip his mp's into the way of the party.
the question of mp's being local can be thrown at a number of mp's including charlie boy, so not so sure on that one
have to say though as a cllr i beliued in standing in my own ward
you get the feel for the area you live/work/play

# 5.....correction...having been an Independent for over 10 years and having,for election purposes,formed ``The
Independents Party of Dover District``still regard myself an Independent.........
Independents do not agree with being controlled by a whip system......they are free to think for themselves.....
In the last County elections came third in front of the Lib/Dems........who had asked me to represent them.....
Best not to assume someones style without knowledge..........

just seen footage of galloway shaking hands with saddam hussain, would have made a great caption competition.
i am struggling to fathom out why people vote for the man, he is a complete and utter charlatan.

Well done Democracy.
The Guardian have something on this result, but nothing so much that I will trouble you all with a link. There is this though...
"The byelection also underlines how local factors can make a mockery of national trends. The latest YouGov poll published by the Sun showed Labour holding a 10-point lead."
There is yet a little Political 'sadness' in that with the General Election still to come the turn out yesterday was, 50.78%.
It aint over till it's over.
Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.

Reg, #11, correction wasn't about you it was about Galloway who is a party MP albeit their only one, but I would think he is hoping not the last after yesterday's result.
With many mayoral elections likely to be coming up soon there are several high profile MPs likely to be resigning in order to stand (including possibly Liam Byrne) so there could be quite a few reassessments going on in all parties this morning.

careful barry w-s your enterng the world of politics lol
ray;
as you know reg was a life long labour supporter until they shafted him and he left to be an indy.
barryw will tell you(if ever he lost support for tories)
if you have it in your blood support for a party you normally take the best bits and hope for at least some of your beliefs to be realised.
reg would never go back to labour(even though asked) as i wouldnt
but you still hold the old values in the hope that at some point labour will go back to its roots and gain the support of the electorate.
of course twinned with this is the present govt which is so out of touch with the electorate,
the only winner at the next general election will be apathy

Not surprisingly, Conservative popularity has fallen to something you find printed underneath a shoe. Size 8.
But with a 50% turnout, that should translate to size 4.

Keith, I know and understand yours and Reg's political history well from reading about it many times on here
As much as we all would like to see some Independents and some genuine independent thinking amongst MPs it would be wrong to class Galloway as one. His party is very much a one man band but he has had other candidates stand in General Elections, and some even come second behind Labour.
What he has done is court a particular sector of the voters in a way that Ken Livingstone is also doing in the London Mayoral election, giving Boris a bit of warning about what might happen in that vote of he doesn't respond. Lots of finger pointing and blame apportioning going on in Labour this morning, apparently the bookies even stopped taking bets on a Galloway win yesterday but no-one told Ed Milliband.
